I just didn't want kayaking to end today. It didn't matter if we were swimming, paddling, or experimenting, I was just in the moment and wanted to stay there.
I've been going with a much more experienced buddy lately and it's been great. I'm learning words and techniques and I'm trying new equipment. Earlier this year I realized I was being held back by my own equipment. It sounds silly, but that was nice; I was (and am) pleased that I'd come that far on my own. It's hard for me to teach myself physical things but I do learn them pretty easily from other people -- provided I'm interested and willing to put some work in that is. All those years giving ski lessons made me really aware of my own learning style and other people's teaching styles and that helps a lot.
My calm demeanor is an asset on the river. Even so, it's a little scary to be secured into a kayak that is upside down in the water. I suppose that fear ensures that I get out fast but I'm not sure I'll ever like it. (I don't usually wear a skirt but my buddy wanted me to learn how to get myself out -- a wet exit -- if necessary.) At least I can think it through though instead of panicking.
Now I just want the last of the water to leave my ears. I think I wound up with water everywhere I didn't have sand. :)
