I just found out a bit more about the movie.
The main characters are Frida, an Iranian teenager; Tom and Lance, a gay couple coming to town to come-out to Tom's mother; and Ms. Banks, a liberal school teacher who is running for mayor of the town against the conservative incumbent, Mayor Burton. Other characters include the Miller family, Judy, Joe and Brian, who interact with Frida and Reverend Haggis and his flock of ultra-conservative Christians, who make life difficult for Tom and Lance.
The writer for the film is of middle eastern decent and he wanted to make a film that addressed his neighbors change in attitude toward him after 9/11. He also also wanted to address a few other issues such as the perception of homosexuality.
