Avatar IMAX

Last night I watched Avatar (yet again!) in 3D IMAX. Little did I know, people would start standing in line an hour before the movie started. I thought getting there 30 minutes before would be plenty of time, but that was most definitely not the case.

Long story short, I was forced to sit 3 rows back in the hugest IMAX theatre, craning my neck for two and half hours. I'm pretty sensitive to motion sickness so I was really afraid of getting sick sitting so close. I can tell that the IMAX experience really is amazing, but I'm upset that I wasn't able to fully enjoy the movie.

That being said, there were some really cool things I noticed sitting close. I didn't realize the amount of detail they put into the Na'vi's hair! I mean, strand by strand, each braid even, was done perfectly. I noticed all the little bugs flying around in the jungle. This movie will never cease to amaze me.

So I've officially seen Avatar in every 3D format (and doubt I will see it in 2D until I buy the DVD). Here are my thoughts on the different forms:

3D IMAX (somewhat construed for being so close) - From what I could tell, it wasn't as clear or sharp as I would like it to be, but the color saturation was amazing. I felt like everything was so much more rich in quality. The 3D, I'm sure, is great, but I couldn't comment too much on it because I was sitting so close. Most of the time, I just saw a whole bunch of ferns trying to poke my face.

Real 3D The best glasses! Their frames are really wide, so you don't see the blurry black outline of your frames. Loved this fact. I think the experience would be comparable to IMAX, except for the color quality I noted above, and the smaller screen.

Dolby 3D Oddly enough, the clearer of the three formats. Everything was much sharper, but their frames are the smallest. Also, nothing seemed to jump out at me. I felt so far away from the screen (though we weren't) and not at all wholly immersed in the world. Would not want to see it in Dolby 3D again.
