She was getting used to having a baby to hold in her arms again. Emmy was growing up to be fiercely independent and didn't crawl into Lily's arms nearly so much as she used to. Baby Scarangelo was small and so very new, quiet and solemn. The blue onesie that they'd found for him was a little too big, and Lily found herself straightening it over little hands and little feet often. From the other room, she could hear the filtered sounds of Eddie getting Emmy into bed. In her rocker in the main room, the one in which she'd sat and nursed Emmy, Lily rocked and, bit by bit, she coaxed the new baby to eat.
They'd had a session with the mother today, with Sarah. She hadn't even looked at her baby.
Lily cooed and lifted him against her breast.
It was going to be a long job, but a worthwhile one. She was just glad that the council had picked her and Eddie as a good fit to help out.
