today i forgot to go to lab (>.< !!!) because i was out on the mall with the MACS bakesale - "Buy a Chiquita, Save a Vaquita!" and "It's for a good porpoise!" .. we did pretty well, though it was funny to be on the other side when i was just telling sarah how you gotta keep a low profile when passing stands lest they capture you. some people looked at us like spangers! hey - we had something to offer (f-ing delicious stuff at that), and hell, there are only 125 vaquitas left. and that was last week. this is all because they've been ridiculously over-bycaught. watch this - recently there's been the first footage of a vaquita ever taken:
http://www.whaletrackers.com/blogs/expedition-vaquita/meet-vaquita-marina.html and in only one week i will be headed for CEDO in mexico! i might get to practice some spanish, tidepool and snorkel, and we will definitely be doing some community service, as well as donating our vaquita money to CEDO to help save this little porpoise from extinction. i'm so excited, even though i don't really know anyone i'm going with. i -will- make friends. i will. i can't wait to see the ocean and maybe ride on a boat, i'm feel so oceanically naive, being a desert rat, but i won't let that stop me from any of it. the question is, do i want to be a field marine biologist, a marine mammal behavioral ecologist, a "professional mariner," a pro diver?, ...and so many more! i trust time will focus this horizon.
