WASHINGTON - Most people think of comic books for kids, but many of today's comics are anything but that.

Huh. I read a blog post (probably linked to from _p?) just the other day that mentioned the exact same scenes referred to in this piece - Batman and Catwoman having sex on a roof, and Starfire having sex with multiple men. Except in that context it was a feminist rant about how the female characters were reduced to ciphers free of their own agency, existing only as fap fodder for men.

I think someone at Fox read that blog and missed the point entirely.

oh yay, I found the post! Thanks, google.

I agree with the problematic depictions, but the comics aren't for kids! They're problems for adults in an adult medium!

It makes me mad how misogyny is often only a problem where little kids might see it.

Hoo boy. Where to start?

While I definitely agree that a lot of DC comics - especially the new line that came out - are incredibly, disgustingly misogynistic and filled with way too much gratuitous violence for my taste, this article has so so many problems.

"They more or less darkened the characters up. Today, they introduce a lot more reality into it like homosexuality, adultery, all that stuff."

Really.

"We want our kids to think sex is an act between two consenting mature individuals who care deeply for one another."

FUCK YOU. SEX BETWEEN TWO CONSENTING MATURE INDIVIDUALS WHO CARE DEEPLY FOR ONE ANOTHER IS JUST THAT. INDIVIDUALS. GENDER HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH IT.

And I know the quotes are by different people and that the second person may not have been including gay relationships in his head when he said that, but the article most definitely set it up that way. Oh no! Two loving gay people in a relationship. THIS COMIC HAS BECOME DARK. THINK OF THE CHILDREN ( ... )

We did the moral panic thing over comics in the 1930's, Fox. You're nearly a hundred years out of date here.
