I know this isn't a story, per se, but as it pertains directly to the membership of the comm, I'm hoping the mods will let it post:

So, getting ready to head up to Atlanta for dragoncon  this Labor Day weekend, and was wondering if anyone else from ontd_political  is going to attend.  Was thinking that it might be fun to do a meet-up some time on Thursday afternoon at the ( Read more... )

Oh man.

First, welcome! Fandom is way cool.

Fair warning: D*C is not like other cons. It's, like, thirty or forty other cons. Much, MUCH larger than a typical con. The parts of the con tend to be more focused on themselves than at other conventions, as well.

Figure out what you'd like to do and see, and make a plan. There is a LOT of programming, which you can find out by going to the con's web site and getting the pocket program.

It's a good idea to bring decent snacks for a few days, in case you can't get to the mall (between the Hyatt and the Marriott) and the lobby shops run out of food. (The mall has a Dairy Queen with decent cheap burgers, a few good sandwich shops, a bulk-tempura Japanese restaurant, etc.)

There are also snack bars set up in at least the Marriott, on the same level as the dealers' rooms and the musicians' tables, where you can get hot dogs, burgers, and such. This is MUCH more important than people realize, as most of the hotel restaurants are pricey, and the hotels themselves (especially the Hyatt) get very crowded, and suddenly you've got a two-hour wait for the elevators.

One of the biggest features of D*C is, of course, the costuming. You'll see some pretty amazing stuff, much of it in the lobby of the Hyatt.

There's also a parade on Saturday, and if you want to go to it get up and out early. It fills the streets.

If you want more information on what various fans are doing, the dragoncon community is very active.

Be patient, don't let yourself get overwhelmed, and have fun. :)
