First photo album: An intimate & personal look at the Obama White House

Apr 29, 2009 12:14

It was 1963 when 2-year-old John F. Kennedy Jr. poked his head out of his father’s Oval Office desk, providing an iconic image for the age of Camelot.

Now comes the Bamelot update - a new snap of President Obama about to climb under the very same desk while a delighted, if slightly shocked, Caroline Kennedy looked on.

“When she walked into the Oval Office, they started talking about the desk,” official White House photographer Pete Souza said of the late President’s daughter to CBS. “And I think the President in the back of his mind remembered that famous photo of John Kennedy.”

There is a trapdoor on the famous desk, and the President “was looking to see if there was a way to open that door.”

The candid image was one of many released Tuesday that reveal that life hasn’t been all work for Obama in his first 100 days - a mark he reaches today.

He’ll acknowledge the milestone tonight with a prime-time news conference from the White House.

The snaps offer an intimate, rarely seen portrait of life in the White House - and what a life it is.

There’s the President and First Lady Michelle Obama kicking back in the White House’s plush private theater, sliding on 3-D specs.
There’s the First Couple sharing a private joke while dancing.

And who knew you could sled at the White House? First Daughters Sasha and Malia do - Souza caught them hitting the hills with Mom behind their new home.
