The fact that not only Trump but also other male politicians are succesfully ducking responsibility for their despicable behavior really exposes the cynical heart of American politics imo. A few years ago it seemed like powerful men in religion were finally starting to answer for their sins. Recently powerful men in business appear to be facing consequences, in particular men in the entertainment and media industries. But even as society in general becomes less tolerant of systemic sexual abuse, powerful men in politics are forgiven because people are more interested in legislative wins than taking a moral stand. The performed contrition of these assholes would be a lot more believable if they actively pursued legislation to avoid similar abuse happening in the future, but they do not.

The most deplorable thing about Trump and his supporters in particular is that there is no contrition, not even acknowledgement of his crimes. If we are going to accept the fact that all people are flawed and politics is a dark, cynical pursuit, at least we should expect our politicians to have the fucking balls to admit that they made mistakes, that they abused their privilege, or that they are simply misogynistic assholes. Sliming your way out of things through denial or deflection just comes across as weak and pathetic. It boggles my mind there are people out there who appear to honestly believe this limp dotard is actually some kind of tough guy. I weep for America.
