Track Palin OKs plea deal in domestic violence case

Track Palin, son of former Alaska governor Sarah Palin, reached a plea agreement in an Anchorage court this week on initial charges of punching a woman in the face at the family's home in January, the Alaska DaIly News reports.

The case was taken up this week by a special court for veterans at the request of the defendant, Track Palin's lawyer, Kevin Fitzgerald, told the newspaper on Friday.

Under the plea agreement, prosecutors dropped two of three misdemeanor charges, including domestic-violence assault and interfering with the report of a domestic-violence crime.

Fitzgerald says Track, who served with the U.S. Army in Iraq for one year from 2008, pleaded to misconduct involving weapons for being under the influence and having a firearm.

Under terms of the deal, Track Palin will have to complete an "alcohol-related" treatment program, Fitzgerald says. The weapon charge would be expunged if he completes the program. Otherwise, he could get a 180-day suspended jail sentence and be placed under informal probation for two years.

Anchorage District Attorney Clint Campion, a military veteran who oversees the local veterans court, told the newspaper that Palin received no special treatment.

Track, 27, was arrested at the Palin family home after a woman told police that he struck and kicked her during a dispute. The woman also said, according to a police affidavit, that he threw her phone and at one point threatened to kill himself with a rifle.

The case surfaced in January just as the former governor and former GOP vice presidential nominee was endorsing Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. She later told reporters Track had returned from Iraq "a bit different" and criticized the Obama administration's treatment options for veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

Trump said this week that Palin would not be attending the Republican convention next week in Cleveland because it was too far from her home state.

"She was asked," Trump told the Washington Examiner in a Thursday interview. "It's a little bit difficult because of where she is. We love Sarah. Little bit difficult because of, you know, it's a long ways away."

Source thinks this explains why Sarah's been MIA a lot more than 'oh, plane tix are pricey'.
