SUNY Albany students indicted on charges of false assault

Three SUNY Albany students who assaulted bus riders then said they were attacked because they’re black were indicted, officials said Monday.

An Albany County grand jury approved enhanced charges of assault and falsely reporting an incident for Ariel Agudio, Asha Burwell and Alexis Briggs, said District Attorney P. David Soares.

One of the three 20-year-old women could be heard in a 911 call obtained by the Times-Union after the Jan. 30 fight aboard a Capital District Transportation Authority bus.

“Hi, I just got jumped on a bus and no one did anything,” one of them said. “Me and my three friends got jumped. It was a racial crime, they were calling us ‘n----r’ and all this stuff. And if someone doesn’t come and take this down, or something, I’m going to call the news.”

Word of the incident did spread, but prosecutors later debunked the women’s account that as many as a dozen white students assaulted them while hurling racial slurs.

Soares announced an array of charges against each of the women Monday. Agudio faces one count of assault, three counts of attempted assault, three counts of false reporting and three counts of harassment.

Burwell is charged with one count of assault, four counts of false reporting and one count of harassment, while Briggs is charged with one count of assault and two counts of false reporting.

The three women, who pleaded not guilty to false reporting charges filed in a lower court in February, will appear for their arraignments on their upgraded raps in county court Wednesday.

I never saw anything about this on here back when it happened, but this is my school and it's been a huge deal here for months. Personally, I believe there is actually much more to the story than what was on the tape.
