John Kasich Confused About Why Women Objected To His Sexual Assault Victim-Blaming Comments

Apr 17, 2016 23:25

Gov. John Kasich (R-OH) said on Sunday that he does not understand the criticism over his comments Friday suggesting that college women should prevent sexual assaults by avoiding parties with alcohol.
In an interview with CNN’s Dana Bash, the Republican presidential hopeful noted that his own daughters will someday go to college parties where there ( Read more... )

In what setting would a rape most likely occur in a university that did not involve alchol?

I don´t like Kasich but people are trying to make a problem out of his well intentioned comment.

What exactly is pleny of them? I always assumed that rape cases that take place in university most likely involved alcohol, but apparently I am wrong for assuming such a stereotype so I am asking you what setting then.

I mean... is it really difficult for you to imagine a scenario without alcohol where rape occurs? Not everyone in college is boozing and there's a reason a lot of women don't want to walk across their campuses at night or feel comfortable living in co-ed dorms/floors...

rape can happen anywhere at any time to any woman. people tell stories of "oh if you don't dress revealing or get drunk you'll be ok" because no one wants to believe it can happen to them. people want to believe they can prevent themselves from being raped somehow when it's not about the actions of the victim but the actions of the rapist.

The other user posted about how victims were getting assaulted walking alone at night. That is really bad. The thought that immediately came to mind for avoiding these assaults would be to not walk home alone at night. I just...don´t understand what answer you wanted Kasich to say? If Kasich suggested that I would feel someone would be screaming foul for that too.

have you ever been to college? sometimes you have night classes. sometimes you just want to go out with your friends after dark. in the winter it gets dark at fuckin' 4 pm, are they not supposed to go out after that? women can't not live their lives because they might get attacked. men need to KEEP THEIR HANDS AND PENISES TO THEMSELVES.

You're missing the point. It should not be on women to have to take extraordinary steps and limit their freedom to live normally to avoid rape. It should be on finding ways to teach men and boys that rape will not be tolerated, ignored, and is never okay.

There is literally no other crime where people are treated this way. If your house gets robbed, no one blames you for having a house. If someone gets murdered, you don't ask, "well what was that person doing that would make them get murdered?"

they were breathing and alive, obv if they were already dead, they wouldn't have gotten murdered

yes exactly so many murder victims totally lead their murderers on! with their breathing and their heartbeat and walking outside while alive. how can you blame the murderer when they get all excited about it?

That isn´t going to happen. Before you call me sexist or anything, remember I am not your enemy. I understand what you are saying but the man who will try to rape these girls does not. So if you want to go on calling me sexist you are free to do so, but the rapists will still be out there and people screaming at me for saying what you said isn´t going to happen will not stop them.

If the world was just things would be as you said, but given the nature of ontd political, it should be clear that this is not so.

Like I said, I understand you completely. You´re absolutely right. The rapist though doesn´t have the same views as I though. You don´t want to see anyone get raped nor do I. We just see the solution to handle it differently. So that is fine you can continue to advocate teaching men to keep their hands to themselves and I will tell women not to walk alone at night. Call me sexist that is fine. I´ll take the title if it prevents a woman from getting raped.

your "solution" has what we've been trying and it hasn't worked at all

it's not just about teaching men to keep their hands to themselves, it's also about teaching them what consent means and what rape IS. dumpweeds dropped a link below, 1 in 3 men don't see "forcible sex" as rape when it's literally the definition. Education should happen, and it should be primarily focused at boys and men so they fully understand what they're doing and whether or not it's rape.

and you can cool it with the "call me a sexist if you want" comments. I never once said that.
