It has come to this. On one hand the European in me flinches with some confusion... MLS? On the other hand, like Thierry Henry who took MLS seriously to the astonishment and appreciation of American fans, it would be nice for Gerrard would continue in that vein because he's a person that would take the league seriously. I know that he said that he wouldn't be in a team that played against Liverpool- but to just leave Europe?

...

MLS?

But where would he go in Europe? He's not that interesting for clubs, there is no guarantee that he will adapt easily to a new style. He is way too expensive for what he might bring, I'm afraid. He won't play for another 5 years, so you can better spend your money on a younger player who either serves you for a long time or who you can sell for a lot of money.

Although it's possible that I'm severely underestimating him right now.

Gerrard has had offers from one or two European clubs, I don't think he'd play beyond one more year (he doesn't want to retire this year, but he dropped hints that he wouldn't be playing beyond the 2015/16 season).

MLS. Well, it worked for Thierry Henry, he made a good fist of it.

Have you watched an MLS game? It's not a particularly fast league. Personally, I think it's a good move. He can play all the football he wants and not burn out at his age.

it's not fast, no, but it's not necessarily a league teaming with skill either (come at me bro) and sans the threat of relegation, there isn't the push for teams to play out of their skins because they don't need to!

Serie A isn't fast, but it's technical, and there's something watching the cagey Italians go about things.

Again, that being said, Gerrard can walk about with his family, go for some sun (I think he'll go to somewhere sunny, the English are real sunbirds) and forget about the machinations of Europe for x years. Also, since he wants to coach, it can only help being in different leagues and see how they go.

Here's hoping he doesn't do a Frank Lampard and says that he's going, but boomerangs back into an opposing team in the PL.

It says a lot when Robbie Keane is the MVP of the league (though Jermaine Jones has been doing very well there) :D

lol it was always going to come down to whoever won MLS Cup I think. If it were the Revs, Nguyen would've gotten it I bet.

hey now, no sports league in the us do promotion and relegation (and if one does thats news to me lol, cause its not nba, nfl, nhl, or mlb) we just dont operate that way and its like we need playoffs/more matches just to watch the best. but teams are always gunning for playoffs. i mean they all would love to be in the world series, playoffs for the super bowl, playoffs for the stanley cup, or playoffs in the nba. oop at me tho cause im not really defending mls but moreso the lack of promotion and relegation cause that not happening in the us soon if not ever. all that said the mls is so meh and im only gonna continue watching cause i have a hometown team. i see why gerrard is going to mls cause he can relax while still doing what he loves. but ugh could he not, hes really making it be the retirement league, while giving the mls more coverage maybe so its good and bad.

to be fair to Toronto, they've never tried to do anything in their whole existence, but yeah, like mentioned before, playoffs are what keep things exciting. NFL teams were busy locking up their seeds in the playoffs over the past couple weeks and it was a big deal. Especially since MLS expanded the playoffs (again), there's really no way a team can't be in the hunt for a playoff spot unless they are just abysmal from the start.

meh, if the Galaxy want to dish out however much money it would take to get him here, be my guest. I can see him ending up at LA though, it seems like a classic Bruce Arena move.

But I thought the MLS drew players out of a hat though. Didn't Jermaine Jones want to go to California, but got farmed out to Boston instead? How can Galaxy decide which player they're going to get?

Bruce Arena is still coaching? Huh.

The league has a different set of rules for USMNT players (I can't remember why they set it up in the first place, I think it was to prevent one team from hogging all the national team stars). Jones got the blind draw iirc because Chicago and NE both made similar offers and it sounded like he didn't particularly care where he ended up (yay more Calvinball!). I'm sure if Jones had really wanted Chicago, for example, he would've gotten Chicago.

If LA want Gerrard and Gerrard wants LA, he'll end up in LA, don't worry about that.

Lol, I thought Bruce Arena had died but there he was in that MLS Cup match, looking flustered.
