Wayne Rooney will miss up to three weeks of action for club and country, Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed tonight.
The striker, who has been short of form and goals all season, was substituted with half an hour left against Bolton in the Barclays Premier League on Sunday and did not travel with the United squad for their Champions League match against Valencia tomorrow night.
The injury update from Ferguson means Rooney will miss the league game at Sunderland on Saturday and also England's Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro on October 12.
Ferguson also confirmed that midfielder Paul Scholes will be sidelined for 10 days with a calf problem.
"It will be two to three weeks," said Ferguson.
"But it depends because Wayne has done quite well with his recovery from injury in the past."

Mata expecting a battle
Valencia midfielder Juan Mata is expecting a physical clash when they play Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League.
Mata knows the Premier League is strong and fast-paced and thinks his team-mates will need to be at their best to succeed.
"British teams are very physical and the pace of the games is much faster than in Spain," explained Mata.
"In physical terms, we'll have to be at our peak.
"But we also have to stick to our football philosophy and keep possession of the ball and hopefully that will be enough."
Mata has also confirmed he is a huge admirer of Ryan Giggs and is disappointed not to be facing his boyhood idol.
Despite United missing a number of key players for the match Mata is wary of the threat they will pose due to their squad depth.
"Ryan Giggs has been a player I have liked very much since I was little," he continued.
"He is a big loss because of his professionalism and experience but for sure whoever takes his place will do their best.
"They'll be missing important players but I think they have a big enough squad to cope."
