EU ministers reject extension of maternity leave

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - Employment ministers on Monday (6 December) rejected a proposal set forward by the European Parliament to extend maternity benefits from 14 to 20 weeks of full pay, seen as excessive while governments struggle to cope with budget deficits. Most states were also sceptical of an 18-week maternity leave proposed by the EU commission.

Romania Plans to Reduce Maternity Leave Prompt Protests

The Romanian government is planning to halve the current maternity leave period, prompting many families to announce protests against the move.

"In Romania, women carry the entire burden of maternity," says Bianca T., who opposes the government plans to reduce post-natal leave to one year from the current two year period.

“Authorities have to accept that the benefits of parent-child bonding to child development are much more important than some reductions in the public budget,” she told Balkan Insight.

This is a follow-up of sorts to this and this post, I thought an update was in order.
Also, in this context, the terms "maternity leave", "parental leave", "paternal leave", "child-care leave", "pregnancy leave" and the like are not always interchangeable (I attempted to loosely explain the difference here), so please bear that in mind before commenting.
