durbin's rising was in the top two the worst vocals of the season. why did he do that to muse? ;___;
haley was my fav (shocker), even if it was my fav of hers ever. lauren was surprisingly good, second best for me. i wish she'd pick more interesting songs though.
vocally jacob and scotty were meh for me, not terrible but boring. casey was somewhere above them, but below the girls. idk with stefano anymore.
the beginning was really flat though, and while it picked up in the middle-ish (when he wasn't too low or high), that last all of 20 seconds tops.
i wish if they'd insist on praising him, he'd go back to vocals like in i'm amazed. that was the last performance of his that didn't have pitch issues.
Honestly I do agree with this a little. It's not like he's going to get tossed off if they criticize him, and I'm not certain it's ever occurred to him to focus on vocal precision. He needs someone to calm down, wipe the flaming pianos from their mind, and take a moment to talk to him about precision in general.
lol this is what i've been saying from the beginning though. he has a lot of talent and naturally large range, but not enough skill yet to control it in a away that is always pleasant. he sounds best when he's putting power behind his voice, but not so much he's going into his higher register and geing sharp. singing a muse song just showed how he's lacking in skill at getting everything to go smooth. matt bellamy's voice is just so on point, it's hard to compare.
lol i got knocked early for saying i don't really like adam's starlight for this very reason. i think he does a good, but it's not quite as nuanced as bellamy's version. anyone trying to do muse is going to be found a little lacking, esp on songs so irrevocably associated with bellamy's vocal style.
Right, I think it's not that we disagree on the basics, it's that we disagree on how to weight stuff. I'll happily toss vocals out the door for someone who knows what the hell to do with a stage, whereas you seem to agree with Randy that this is a singing competition?
Although, I also think that part of the problem James is having here is that his vocals are geared towards a different genre. It would sound REALLY weird to sing metal with the kind of precision that Bellamy uses, like it would actively be the wrong way to do it. But he does need to develop the skill now he's moving out into other material.
lol it is a singing competition, first and foremost, and i feel like if it wasn't, they might as well train people to lipsync well and be done with it. i think having great stage presence is important too, that's it's a part of being a great singer, but so is finding a viable recording artist, and james only fits in one of those categories
( ... )
It's looking for a pop star, a voice alone wouldn't do that, or Susan Boyle would have Lady Gaga's place in the world. You need more than one ability
( ... )
idt they're necessarily looking for a popstar anymore though, i think they're looking for anyone who will be a viable recording artist. scotty, for instance, isn't super all over the stage, but you know he's going to be the best selling out of this group simply cause his genre is one of the highest selling. once pia was off, i think they had to resign themselves for getting a non-pop star, unless lauren pulls some type of upset. and lol if they were looking for a popstar, they wouldn't be praising james at all. his genre of rock has been dead longer than i've been alive
( ... )
Declaring genres dead is ridiculous, they rise from the grave more often than soap opera stars. And usually as slightly popper versions of their last incarnation, until they've cleaned up enough to get on radio. And James has a strong shot of glam in his ancestry, he's got as good a shot as anyone else these days.
He's working on what's working for him. That's what I meant by saying he's not focused on what you want from him, I wasn't trying to imply that you're bound to some genre, I'm sorry it came off that way! I just meant the stage vs vocals thing again, you keep telling me you want vocals from him, but he gets a better response for his stage work, so he focuses on that instead. And I'm trying to say that doesn't mean he's doing it wrong, just differently than you would in his shoes. Not anything about genre at all!
lol if you think this is what i want from him. i want for him to be gone and to stop hurting my ears. i think that is what idol wants from it's winner, a viable recording artist who sells albums. if the winner of idol has pitch issues a good bit of the time, they lose credibility for being a singing competition (like with lee). i'm saying that if he has the stage down, as you claim, then why shouldn't he work on the weaker part of his performances? why isn't anyone telling him that? then he'd be the whole package. though i'd argue that if the most memorable thing from your performance is a flaming piano and/or your guest guitarist, then it's not really you people care about: it's the tricks
