Arrival, why are the trains always late in Italy?

WHO: Giuseppe Adama and Open
WHAT: Gipo arrives in Reggio
WHEN: December 8, evening
WHERE: Reggio Calabria Centrale Train Station, the beach between the station and the Don's house

Walking, Gipo liked walking along the beach in the early evening and the Reggio di Calabria Centrale train station offered him the opportunity to do so and then get to his pensione in time for an early dinner. That is if the train had gotten in on time. Why in God's name had he expected the train to get in on time? Did any train in Italy ever run on time? He remembered returning to Italy from Switzerland. The train had been like clockwork in the latter country. By the time they reached the first station in Italy, well time, that was just it wasn't it? By the first station in Italy they had already been late.

He'd dreaded the trip to Switzerland, but he'd needed to visit his Swiss bankers periodically. There just weren't very many safe ways to do banking with large amounts of money these days except in person. It had been a long trip and he was tired but he really needed the relaxation of his walk on the beach. He really missed the sea. His two years serving on one of his father's ships had actually been an enjoyable time. So much for that life though; he'd severed his connections to his father big time.

He'd been assured the walk from the train station to Pensione Delfina was a short one. He'd booked a double room; he always booked a double room. He crossed the track and walked up the coast a short distance. Not as far as he would have liked to go but the sun was getting close to the horizon and he was smart enough to not want to be out in a new place after dark. So he turned back to find Via Crocifisso and wondered, would they find him or would he have to go to them?
