Human Nature

So here's my entry for today. Before I post about the topic, I should mention...Tash and I before were trying to write about something positive that happened in our life every day. So we're going to try to bring that back too. After the topic...write about something positive at the end of your journal entry. Might as well leave on a positive note, right?

So the topic for the day is...Human nature. What IS 'human nature' exactly? Well from what I've been learning in personality psychology is its a characteristic the has evolutionary roots...that is a range of human behavior believed to be invariant over long periods of time and across very different cultural contexts.

my question is...is it "human nature" to get off on other people's suffering?? People DO seem to be fixated on death, other's suffering, etc. For example, people over the centuries have been FASCINATED in watching hangings and other such public deaths. A more modern example: Britney Spears. You can't turn on the TV or radio without hearing some kind of low blow of a joke aimed at Britney spears.

Yes, I do think she is out of control. Yes, I do think she is trashy. Yes, I don't really think much of the girl, never have and am not going to start now. She shaved her head. She checked in and out of rehab. OBVIOUSLY she's going through some kind of emotional/mental break down. All I keep hearing is bald jokes. Is this really appropriate? I mean I can't help but feel bad for the girl. Would you make fun of a mentally ill person? Someone who's handicapped? I mean come on. She SHAVED her head. WHAT IS SO FUNNY ABOUT THAT?

A man on TV today said he gets off on making fun of britney spears and every stupid thing she does because it makes him feel better about HIS life. This is just sad. How does her SUFFERING bring you pleasure? People getting off on other people's pain is just sick. And the sad thing is it happens every day and we're all guilty of it.

To end on a positive note: Today, was an awesome day for me. I went to all my classes, worked out, worked all day, and was in general, really productive. AND I did every thing with a smile on my face. Something that made me happy today was snuggling with Kita (the dog). She licked my face. WHICH I normally find kinda sick. But she only does it to me...which I have to admit was cute. And she got really excited to see me. I mean who can't love coming home to that?
