BACKGROUND: Kyon is... average. Which is to say, he's a human in the SOS Brigade, a group that otherwise consists of an alien, an esper, a time-traveler, and a nigh-omnipotent being. Even his grades and athletic ability are average. Yet, if there's one extraordinary trait about Kyon, it is his tolerance of the other members of the SOS Brigade, their fearless leader Haruhi in particular. Despite the zaniness, the chaos, and sometimes the flat-out insanity of being in the SOS Brigade, Kyon has managed to remain a voice of reason and a calming influence on Haruhi's mad plots and antics. The only normal human "chosen" for Haruhi's group, all the other parties are very much interested in Kyon, and know that without him, Haruhi's wrath might well go beyond all reasonable bounds, and the destruction of the world as they know it would be high-- with almost as high a chance of no world being recreated afterwards. In some ways, because he is the only one who knows of Haruhi's power that is willing to stand up to her, Kyon may well be the single most important human to the continued existence of the universe...

THIRD PERSON: It was going to be a long day. He could tell just from the way she was all but giggling as she bounced in her seat, eyes gleaming brightly.
The question wasn't so much what it was-- as long as it wasn't completely insane, they'd probably end up doing it over his protests anyway-- as how much Kyon would need to get her to tone it down. By the look of things, he would be lucky if it were an after-school activity, or, better yet, a weekend activity. If it was something she could start at lunchtime... well, they were doomed. He knew that gleam, and, by now could tell how much talking it would take to get her to back down.
The first exuberant words out of her mouth as she shoved her face into his:
"Meeting at lunch!"
Yep. It was going to be a long day.
