if only I could fly away

Jul 28, 2005 22:14

So it's official.

I got my flight confirmation email today:

(Canjet Airlines, cost $194 w/o taxes)
Date: Sat 03 Sep 2005
Depart: TORONTO-T3 09:15
Arrive: ST. JOHN'S 14:50

Pretty scary. When did I ever decide to move to a place I've never visited? What if I hate the city? What if I get a completely wrong vibe from the campus. Talking to a couple of students, MUN sounds like a bit of a party school. Which is fine, as long as I have my time and place to focus and further my knowledge and abilities. I have all my music courses, then I'm taking English and Earth Sciences. My English teacher appears to be highly rated on ratemyprofessors.com (if you haven't been there, you should check it out, for whatever school you go to the ratings will tell you which profs to avoid or to look for). Actually, most of the music faculty appears to be well-loved.

My hope for the music school is that it is a community. I want to be able to walk down the halls and feel the same warmth and familiarity as I did at MMA. That is why I'm not going to U of T. I want to be more than a number, more than a 'Ms Protulipac' on a piece of paper or computer screen. I suppose music students are lucky in the fact that they get a private instructor, one that they will most likely have for all of their undergraduate. My piano instructor will be Dr. Kristina Szutor, BMus from UBC, MMus from Juilliard, and DMA from UBC. She has recordings, is played regularly on CBC radio, and is a prominent pianist on the Atlantic Coast. Actually I found one of the tenured piano profs is on sabbatical next year, and to compensate they accepted a less than usual number of pianists. The Piano Class of 2009 will at most graduate a total of six pianists. I'm thrilled that pianists are greatly outnumbered in the music deptartment.. There are 50-60 first years in the BMus program, with only six pianists. That means I'll get a lot of accompanying gigs ($$ :D), think about it, every other instrumentalist or vocalist, asside from classical guitarists and percussionists requires piano accompaniment for most of their repetoire for Rehearsals/Coachings, Juries, Recitals, and any other performances.

Shoot me before I say this..

I'm excited for school to start.
God I want new repetoire.
