Ummm. Hi. I don't really know where to start with this.
First off, I'm Allison. I'm 27 and currently living in Raleigh, NC. From 2004-2010 I kept a LiveJournal under the username
emotionalwench. I've grown a lot from who I was when I first began that journal, so I though it was time to start anew. I don't have internet at my current apartment, but I'm going to try to update this journal as much as I can when I visit coffee houses and other places with WiFi.
Probably the three aspects of myself that I'll write about the most on this journal are: my identity as a writer (I have a degree in Literature and Creative Writing from the University of North Carolina at Asheville, and have been accepted into the Creative Writing & Publishing MFA program at the University of Baltimore); my identity as a political liberal (GLBT rights is most important to me); and my identity as a Unitarian Universalist.
Probably the last one has been the most important to me recently. As an agnostic I feel I can never be 100% certain whether God exists, but I'm an extremely spiritual person who has always been deeply fascinated by religion.
I consider myself a liberal/progressive Christian, a Buddhist, and a Celtic pagan all rolled into one. Lately I've been concentrating the most on the Christian aspect of my spirituality. I truly believe that the Mediterranean Jewish peasant, Yeshua ben Yosef (who most call Jesus), was a great moral teacher who died in the name of a message he was deeply passionate about. The writings of the religious scholars Marcus Borg and John Dominic Crossan have done a lot to make me see that while there are a lot of bad/annoying Christians out there, there is much that is extremely positive about Jesus's actual message. I strive to model my life on his teachings of love and compassion, just as I strive to model my life on the teachings of other great leaders like the Buddha and Mohandas K. Gandhi.
I have a feeling that spiritual/religious ramblings may comprise a lot of what I post about here. If that isn't your thing, feel free to ignore it. I totally understand, as as one's religious beliefs are extremely personal and are not for everyone to read about. I have never wanted to proselytize to anyone or change anyone's mind about their religious beliefs or lack thereof...that's just gross, dude. :P But this is my journal and as such it is my place to write about things I can't write or talk about anywhere else.
I also hope to write a lot about the two unfinished novels I have currently in the works, as well as what I'm reading these days. I'm an avid reader, especially of fiction. The collection on my bookshelves is large and growing. A few months ago I bought my first e-reader, a Barnes & Noble Nook, and I can't get enough of it. It's caused me to read even more (and faster) than I did before. I do still read DTBs ("Dead Tree Books"), though, and love checking out books from the library.
This is probably enough for my first post and my introduction to myself on this journal. I hope to keep up with my old LJ friends on here, as well as meet lots of awesome new people.
