Smoke

The gang was at Ted's house, and Ted was showing them around again, explaining what he eventually wanted to do with the place. It had not been long since Barney saw his dad last…an hour at most. The basketball hoop was sitting out on the deck. Robin didn't listen as Ted droned on and on about crown moldings and shelving and hard-wood floors and Luke and Leia's future rooms. She watched as Barney slipped quietly outside onto the deck when he thought no one was watching.

Robin bit her lip and wondered to herself for a moment whether or not he wanted company. She went with her instincts and followed him outside a few moments later.

He was leaning up against the wall, straight faced. He looked exhausted - emotionally and physically.

"Hey," Robin greeted him quietly. She leaned up against the wall next to him, leaving about a foot of space between them.

Barney replied, "Hey."

They stood in silence for several minutes, and Robin hoped that her presence was not unwanted. But she watched his shoulders drop and the tension there erase as she stood with him, so she took that as a good sign.

Robin reached into her purse and pulled out a pack of cigarettes and a lighter.

"Want one?" she asked

Barney nodded silently.

Robin stuck two in her mouth, lit them both, and passed one Barney's way.

He chuckled. "Thanks."

"Don't mention it."

Robin took a drag of her cigarette.

Barney did the same. "This hits the spot."

Robin smiled. "It always does."

He chuckled and muttered under his breath, "Yeah, it does."

Robin scoffed, but her slight smile and sparkle in her eyes made it clear she was amused.

She spoke, "Yeah, yeah…so…I hate the be the one to bring it up, but…do you want to talk about it?"

"Nope." Barney's answer was short and resolute.

"Okay. Well, from one member of the dysfunctional families and horrible fathers club to another, I'm here if you ever need to talk, okay?"

Barney put out his cigarette and dropped it to the ground. He nodded.

Robin followed suit and flicked her cigarette from her hand. She snubbed out the burning embers with her heel.

They stood in silence for a moment, and Robin took a step closer to him. She rested her head on his shoulder for the briefest of moments. She picked her head back up and fought the urge to grab his hand, instead leaning further into the wall next to him. They breathed in sync for several silent moments, then Robin stood up straight and gave Barney a quick squeeze on the shoulder.

She pulled out her pack of cigarettes and lighter and held them out to him in offering.

"Parting gift?" she asked.

Barney grabbed another cigarette, lit it, and handed her back the pack and lighter.

Robin headed back inside the house, but not before she saw a flicker of a smile on Barney's face as he took a drag from the cigarette.
