There was a peaceful atmosphere in KAT-TUN’s dressing room, with no screams or ruckus for once. Jin had been reading Kame a story and the little boy had fallen asleep after a while, sitting on Jin’s lap. The man had not moved from the couch ever since, just carefully holding the boy and watching him sleep with a sweet smile plastered on his lips. Kame’s tiny hands were fisted on Jin’s t-shirt, and the man would stroke the chubby fingers from time to time.

Jin looked up when Koki sat down on the couch by his side and peeked at Kame’s peaceful face, smiling dumbly. The kid sighed, stirred a little and cuddled closer to Jin’s chest without waking up, merely mumbling something.

“He’s so cute” Koki said. Jin nodded, tracing Kame’s little hands with his fingers. “Do you have any idea why you turned back into an adult and Kame didn’t?”

“I don’t know. But I remember feeling very lonely and helpless when I was so small, and I didn’t want Kazu to feel like that… No if I could protect him from it.”

However, as it turned out Jin couldn’t protect Kame all he would have wanted. He had to go to Hokkaido to film a Cartoon KAT-TUN episode with Nakamaru and Taguchi, and neither Ueda nor Koki could take care of Kame while he was busy. He had tried his other friends and senpais, but everyone seemed to be busy that day, so he had no other choice but to leave Kame in a day-care centre. Which the kid didn’t like one bit.

Kame whined and clung to Jin as the man dragged him toward the building. Jin stopped in front of the door and crouched down to look at the pouting kid in the eye.

“I want to be with Jin.”

“I know sweetie, but you can’t. I’ll have to work and I won’t be able to look after you, so you have to stay here for the day.”

“I don’t like it.”

“Come on, you haven’t even given it a chance.”

“But last time…”

Jin sighed, he had expected that would be the reason why Kame was so against the idea. He ruffled Kame’s hair, though the kid still looked about to cry. “I promise that won’t happen again, alright? This is the place where senpai brings his daughter, so it’s a good place.”

The boy still looked far from convinced when Jin pulled him inside the building and to the check-in counter. The lady there was very nice as Jin introduced the both of them and signed Kame in for the day. Jin crouched down in front of Kame again and hugged the kid, kissing his forehead and ruffling his head.

“Now have a nice day here and be a good boy, alright? I promise to pick you in the night.”

“B- But Jin…”

Kame’s eyes were growing teary, and Jin knew he’d have a hard time leaving the kid there if he started crying. “It’ll be only for the day and I’m sure you’ll have fun, so don’t worry and be a good boy. See you later, Kazu-chan!”

Despite Jin’s resolution it was still a small struggle to loosen Kame’s tiny fists where they were clinging to his t-shirt, and the boy was left holding the lady’s hand and sniffling softly. Inside the day-care centre there was a huge play room, but Kame couldn’t find any interest in the toys. Being moody and alone and angry at Jin on top of that his adult mind had started taking control again and he didn’t feel like playing with toys nor little kids, never mind he was one of them. At the end he settled for looking at illustrated stories alone in a corner.

He managed to pass time until lunch, but food was another problem in itself. They were brought to a diner room and sat in bright plastic chairs to eat lunch. Kame was fine with the miso soup, the rice and the tonkatsu, but the salad had tomato, and Kame didn’t like that. He refused to eat, pouting and throwing a little tantrum when the caregivers tried to force him. However he finally gave up when he saw the other kids getting a taiyaki cake filled with chocolate, and he did want that. Kame stuffed the tomato in his mouth and quickly munched of it with his eyes tightly closed and his face scrunched up in disgust. He stuck his tongue out when he swallowed, but soon enough he was given the cake, which he was more than happy to eat.

They were allowed to play for a while after lunch and Kame sat down to draw for a while; he even remembered Jin had told him to be a good boy and got over his annoyance with the man to speak to a few of the other kids. There was an especially nice little girl who sat with him and complimented his drawings despite his lack of artistic skills. She lied down in the mat beside his when nap time arrived, though Kame’s nap was rather short. He woke up after a few minutes and remembered Jin was not around to put him back to sleep, which did nothing to improve his mood. He sniffled, pulled the blanket back and got up, settled on finding a phone to call Jin for the man to pick him up already.

He didn’t get very far, since just as he had managed to step out of the napping room without waking up any of the other kids his way was suddenly blocked by a caregiver. The woman kneeled down to be face to face with him and frowned after reading the name tag the kid had been given in the morning.

“Where are you going, Kazuya-kun? Do you need to use the toilet?” Kame shook his head, pouting up at her. “Then what do you want?”

“Phone.”

“What for?”

“Wanna call Jin.”

The woman sighed, picking the boy up; the staff had been informed of their unusual customer. “You can’t call Jin-san. He’ll come to pick you up later, so why don’t you try to sleep for a while?”

“Not sleepy.”

“Come on, I can see that’s not true. Just try to sleep a little and when you wake up it’ll be almost time for Jin-san to come pick you up.”

The woman tried to get Kame back to the napping room, but he started to wail and struggle as soon as she opened the door, so she rushed to close it again before the other kids could wake up. At the end she had to bring Kame to the room where the caregivers were resting, and the staff spent the rest of the nap time pampering the kid and trying to get him to fall asleep again. They didn’t manage to do it, and having all the adults’ attention focused on him only reminded Kame further that the one he wanted to pay attention at him, namely Jin, wasn’t there.

Of course the lack of sleep made Kame grumpy, and he refused to play with the other kids when they woke up from their nap. Even Izumi-chan, the little girl who had been drawing with him before had little luck, and only managed to get Kame to play families with her after a good deal of insisting, and Kame only agreed to play because being alone all he could think about was Jin and he had at some point remembered he was annoyed at the man for leaving him there. So at the end Kame planted a sloppy kiss on Izumi-chan’s cheek and pretended to be her hardworking husband for a couple of hours.

Izumi-chan’s mother arrived to pick her up a little past five o’clock, and though Kame was suddenly deprived of his playmate he didn’t mind much because that had to mean Jin would arrive to take him home soon too, so he left the playground and ran to the building’s entrance. However soon it became more than clear Jin was going to be late. The kids started to leave as their parents came to pick them up and take them home, the ski turned darker, the clock got past six in the afternoon and Jin still was nowhere to be seen.

One of the caregivers sat down on the steps leading to the building, as the kid had moved there as his anxiety grew.

“Kazuya-kun? Why don’t you come inside? You are going to get cold here.”

“No. Jin is coming.”

“I’m sure someone’s coming to pick you up soon, but why don’t we wait inside?”

Kame was vaguely aware of the nagging suspicion the word someone woke in his mind, but he was upset and anxious and wanted Jin back; he was not in the mood to get his adult mind back in control to consider the possible implications of what the caregiver had just said, so he simply shook his head and threatened to scream when the woman tried to take him inside. At the end she had no other option but to wait with him.

Kame perked up when a car pulled over to the side in front of the building. He got up eagerly, though the man who came out of the vehicle was not Jin but… Yamapi? The kid frowned but hugged the adult tightly when Yamapi swept him off his feet, happy to see a familiar face at least. Yamapi smiled, ruffling the kid’s hair.

“Hey there, Kame-chan. How have you been?”

Kame completely ignored the question, going straight to what he wanted to know. “Where’s Jin? He said he was going to pick me up.”

Yamapi sighed and settled the kid back on the ground, deciding to ignore the question for the moment and turning to face the caregiver, who seemed to be a little struck at the sudden arrival of the idol. Yamapi flashed her a bright smile and a polite bow.

“Good evening. I’m sure Akanishi-san has called already regarding Kamenashi-kun…”

“Oh, yes! He said you’d pick him up. He called a few hours ago.”

Yamapi smiled, waving her goodbye before turning to the kid. “Okay Kame-chan, let’s go.”

The kid frowned deeply, digging his heels on the ground as Yamapi tried to drag him toward the car. “No! Jin said he would pick me up! I want to wait for Jin!”

“Jin is not coming, Kame-chan. He told me to take care of you tonight. Come on, we’ll have fun together!”

“No! I want Jin! I wait for Jin! Kazu wants Jin!”

It was never a good sign that Kame started talking about himself in third person. He resisted going with Yamapi and cried and struggled as the man brought him into the car and fastened his seatbelt. The kid fought him all the while and even tried to undo the seatbelt, refusing to listen to anything Yamapi tried to tell him. Kame was crying loudly, tears rolling down his cheeks as he wailed and called Jin’s name.

“Kame-chan! Kame-chan, listen! Calm down and listen, it’s Jin, alright? Listen to Jin.”

Kazuya?

Kame sniffled, calming down a little when he heard Jin’s voice. Yamapi had called his friend and put him on the speaker while he drove home. Kame clumsily wiped his tears away. “Jin?”

Hey there, Kazu-chan. How are you? Have you been a good boy?

“Yes… Where is Jin? Kazu misses Jin.”

I can’t understand you if you talk like a baby, Kazu.

There were a few moments of silence as Kame sniffled and pouted, but he finally gave up. “I missed you.”

That’s better. I’m sorry I couldn’t go to pick you up, but filming took longer than we had expected. But you’re with Pi, isn’t that good?

“No. I want Jin. I want Jin to come back.”

There was a sigh at the other end. I know, Kazu. But I have to stay here until tomorrow’s morning, so you have to spend the night with Pi…

“I don’t want to! I don’t want Pi, I want Jin! Only Jin, I want Jin!”

Kazuya. The voice was stern and it put an end to Kame’s cries. Pi is going to take care of you tonight. Be a good boy and don’t give him trouble, or I’ll be very sad, alright? If Pi tells me you behave, I’ll get you a surprise. Now I have to hang up, so say bye bye~

The kid mumbled a quiet goodbye before Yamapi ended the call, but he was very silent and gloomy for the rest of the ride to the adult’s home. At least Pi’s dogs seemed to cheer him up a little, and he played with them and petted them after his bath while the adult prepared something for dinner; the two dogs were good babysitters and had an infinite patience with the kid. The improved mood made the kid tamer during dinner and he ate without giving problems, though that changed again when Pi suggested it was bed time.

“I don’t want to go to bed without Jin!”

“Kame-chan… We’ve talked about this. Jin can’t come tonight.”

“I won’t sleep! Not without Jin!”

“Come on, don’t be like that. Let’s go lie down on the bed and you’ll be asleep in a moment.”

“No! Kazu wants Jin! Kazu doesn’t sleep without Jin!”

“Kame, don’t talk like a baby…”

“Kazu wants Jin!”

Yamapi sighed and picked up the struggling kid to take him to the bed, but Kame only struggled more, cried and tried to kick and ran away when Yamapi settled him on the mattress. It was quickly irritating the man and both his dogs had started barking along with Kame’s cries, so at the end Yamapi resorted to his phone and called Jin again. His friend sighed after Yamapi explained the situation and asked him to give Kame the phone.

Kazu-chan?

“J- Jin?”

Pi told me you’re not behaving well.

Kame pouted, gripping the phone tightly against his ear and snuggling against the cushions on the bed. “Not true.”

Are you sure? Because it’s well past bed time, you should be sleeping.

“Kazu…” Kame caught himself just in time and quickly brought a hand in front of his mouth before correcting himself. “I don’t want to sleep without you!”

Jin sighed. Why?

“Nightmares.” It was only a mumble, but it made Jin smile nonetheless.

Will they go away if I tell you a bedtime story? Okay, listen carefully.

Yamapi watched as the kid sniffled softly and listened to Jin’s tale while slowly getting sleepy. Soon his eyes were closing, and by the time Jin finished his tale the kid was almost asleep. He mumbled a soft goodnight on the phone and handed the small device to Yamapi, who held it to his ear.

“Jin?”

Yeah. Has he calmed down now?

“Yeah, thanks for that. He wouldn’t listen to me. Are you guys still filming?”

Nah, we’re already in the hotel, but I’m beat so I’m going to hang up now. Oh, and don’t let Kazuya forget to use the toilet before going to sleep. We had a… little accident last time. But don’t tell him I told you!

Pi laughed and hung up after wishing his friend goodnight. He crouched down by the bed and poked the sleepy kid’s cheek, earning a pout in response. “Kazu-chan, are you sleep now?” The kid nodded, swatting Pi’s hand away when the man tried to poke him again. “Have you gone to the toilet already? Or you don’t need to?”

Kame gasped and quickly jumped off the bed to run into the toilet, only to come back out with a contented smile a few minutes later. This time he let Yamapi pick him up and settle him on the bed to tuck him in. The adult stroked Kame’s hair and wished him sweet dreams, but the kid refused to let go of him even when already half asleep. At the end Yamapi had no other option but to lie down on the bed; he had intended on just waiting until Kame had fallen asleep, but he ended up getting sleepy too.

Though he had not expected to wake up the next morning with a very adult and very naked Kame sleeping next to him.
