chapter VIII Jin pouted at the sheep plushy, and threw an envious look to the robot Kazuya was playing with. It was not fair. He had asked for the robot when they had gone to buy the toys. Kazuya had wanted the sheep, so it should be him playing with it and not Jin. But Ueda had told him to let Kazuya play with it, because Jin was older and had to be nice to the toddler. But Jin was bored, and wanted to play with robot.
Still with a pout bigger than life Jin made his way to the table, where Koki was writing some paper for a magazine. He pulled on the man’s trousers, but Koki did not even look down from his paper and just ruffled the kid’s hair distractedly. Jin whined, catching the man’s hand and pulling on it.
“I’m hungry!”
Koki sighed, looking down at him. “I’m sorry, Jin, but I have nothing.”
Jin frowned, pointing to a chocolate bar resting on the table. “Liar!”
“You know that’s all my food until lunch, and you had breakfast just a while ago. Go and ask Ueda to get you something from the cafeteria.”
Jin stomped his feet, whining. “But I want chocolate!”
“No is no, Jin.”
The kid walked away, fuming, and plopped down on the couch beside Taguchi. He watched as Kazuya got up and demanded to be sat on Koki’s lap. The man picked him up immediately, smiling dumbly and cooing over him. Kazuya pointed to the chocolate bar and pouted cutely at the man, giving him the puppy eyes. Koki melted not even a moment later, handing the kid a generous piece of chocolate. Jin crossed his arms over his chest. It was not fair.
He diverted his attention to Junno, who was engrossed in his videogame. Jin watched the little characters beat each other up on screen, and ended up practically sitting on the man’s lap. He pointed to the PSP, looking up at his band mate.
“I want to play too.”
Junno smiled, patting his head. “I’m sorry, Jin, but it’s too violent. You shouldn’t even be watching, Uepi will kill me if I let you play with this.”
“But I’m bored! I want to play!”
“Sorry, Jin. I’ll bring something more suitable tomorrow, alright?”
Jin glared at the man and jumped off the couch, kicking his band-mate’s leg lightly. “Idiot!”
Seeing Kazuya had finally left the robot, Jin grabbed it and went to sulk in a corner. Kazuya had moved to sit on the couch, and was smashing the buttons of Taguchi’s PSP, giggling happily. Jin’s pout grew bigger. Why could Kazuya play and not Jin? He sat with his back to the toddler, playing gloomily with his toy. He looked up when Ueda patted his head lightly.
“We’re leaving for practice now. Nishikido is coming to pick you two up in a moment, okay? Wait here and don’t cause problems, understood?”
Jin nodded slowly, and soon the two kids were alone in the room. Kazuya walked up to him, pointing to the robot.
“I want to play with that.”
“Well, you can’t. I’m playing with it now.”
Kazuya frowned. “But I want it! I want to play with the robot!”
“You were playing with it before. It’s my turn.”
Kazuya stomped his feet and hit Jin’s shoulder. He grabbed the toy and started pulling on it, shouting at Jin to give him the robot. As Jin refused to give it up they fought for a while, until Jin released it suddenly, making the younger kid fall sitting on his butt. Kazuya frowned angrily at him, and threw the toy at Jin. It hit the boy on the forehead, and a moment later Jin was crying loudly, rubbing the hurt area. Seeing the older cry, Kazuya started wailing himself, sitting where he was and smashing his little fists against the floor.
That was the image Ryo found when he stepped into the room a few seconds later. He sighed, wondering why he had not sent Pi to pick the babies up, and crouched down to pick the youngest one up. Kazuya clung to him, burying his face against the adult’s t-shirt as he sniffled softly. Ryo turned to glare at Jin.
“What have you done to Kame now, Jin?”
The kid looked up at him with wide teary eyes. He flailed his arms in frustration, wailing. “I didn’t do anything!”
Kame hiccupped. “Jin is a liar! Jin pushed Kazu! Kazu hurts!”
Ryo sighed, rocking the kid slightly to shush him, and glared at Jin again. “We’ll talk about this later, Jin. I don’t want to hear a word. Come on.”
Jin followed the man meekly, head downcast. He sat silently on the couch when they reached News’ dressing room, not even caring to look up as Ryo told Yamapi what had happened. A few moments later his best friend crouched in front of him, looking disappointed.
“Why did you hit Kazuya, Jin?”
Jin looked up, trying to convince his friend. “But I didn’t! Kazu hit me!”
“Jin, Kazuya is too small to hit you, and even if he did, he wouldn’t have hurt you. You’re a big boy, you should know better than to hit a younger kid. That’s half an hour of time out for you. Just sit here and don’t give any more problems.”
Jin watched with watering eyes as Yamapi stood up and walked away to play with Kazuya, but a glare from Ryo when he tried to follow the adult sent Jin back to his place. He sulked there for a while, until Yamapi started playing the plane with Kazuya. Jin watched in fascination how the younger boy was lifted and swayed through the air, giggling loudly as Yamapi made engine noises. Jin jumped from the couch forgetting his time out, and pulled insistently on his best friend’s trousers, looking up with hopeful eyes.
“Pi! Pi, me too! Please! I want to do the plane too!”
Yamapi looked down, frowning slightly. “I’m playing with Kazuya now, Jin. Plus you’re too old for this; you’re already too heavy. And weren’t you on time out?”
Jin threw his friend a desolated look, but Yamapi was no longer looking at him. In fact no one was looking at him. Seeing the door open, Jin ran through it without a word. It was only when Ryo’s wristwatch beeped and Yamapi went to tell the kid he could play now that they realized Jin was missing. Ryo scratched the back of his head, looking at the empty couch.
“… We’re screwed.”
Yamapi cursed Jin’s new reduced size as they searched for him all over the building, everything Ueda had promised to do them if the kid was not found soon very clear in their minds. They had the two whole groups looking for him, and more people joined as time passed and the kid was still missing.
Nearly an hour later Ueda was rubbing his temples, trying to convince himself that it was impossible for Jin to have left the building without them noticing it. He reminded himself that screaming would not do any good as a couple of juniors knocked softly on the door and poked their heads inside with a hint of fear.
“U- Ueda-senpai? I- I… W- We, I… I think we have found… Akanishi-senpai.”
Ueda bolted to his feet, urging the boys to show him to where Jin was and following them quickly. He stopped in front of the closed door of whichever group the boys were from, though he did not hesitate to open it. And true enough, there was a little figure sitting on the couch, hugging a cushion tightly and crying softly into it.
Jin did not care to look up, and so he gasped in surprise when Ueda picked him up. For a moment the kid tried to struggle and get free, only to give up and cling to the man tighter, crying louder into his shoulder. Ueda sighed, sitting down on the couch with the boy on his lap and motioning the juniors to go away. He rubbed the kid’s back softly until Jin calmed down a little. The boy refused to let go of Ueda, though, even as the man dried off his tears with a handkerchief. Ueda petted through the Jin’s hair reassuringly.
“You have everybody worried sick looking for you. Are you going to tell me what’s wrong?”
Jin sniffled, little fists tightening over Ueda’s shirt. “Liar. Nobody is looking for me.”
“What makes you think that?”
“Nobody likes me.”
Ueda blinked, surprised at the kid’s statement. As the man took some time to react, Jin started sobbing again, new tears sliding down his cheeks. Ueda sighed, drying them again.
“Why do you say that, Jin? It’s not true. We all like you.”
Jin shook his head, still crying. “B- But Koki d- didn’t give me his ch- chocolate and gave it to K- Kazu… And Ju- Junno too with his game! And Ryo-chan s- scolded me even though it’s been Kazu who had hi- hit me! A- And Pi di- didn’t want to play with me!”
Ueda sighed, promising painful deaths to all those idiots the moment he saw them. For the moment he stood up and put the kid on the floor, drying the last tears and ruffling his hair.
“Come on, you know those are all idiots, don’t worry about that. I like you a lot, and Kazu-chan too. Let’s go to see Kazu-chan, don’t you want to?”
Jin nodded, following Ueda to their dressing room. However, Kazuya did not spare the older boy a single glance when they stepped in. Ueda sat Jin on the couch, ripping Junno’s PSP away from the man and giving it to the kid. A single glare from him cut Taguchi’s complaint, and Koki did not need to be told twice to go get Jin something from the machine. Kazuya was already pouting up at him when Ueda went to pick him up and made him face Jin. The younger kid ignored the other’s grin and turned his face away with a pout.
“Kazuya… Did you hit Jin?”
“No.”
“No lying, I’ll know.”
“… Maybe?”
Ueda sighed, frowning at the kid. Kazuya put up his best guilty expression, without much success.
“And why did you do that?”
Kazuya looked away, mumbling. “He didn’t give me the robot.”
“You had been playing with the robot before, Kazuya, and it’s Jin’s. You know you shouldn’t hit him. Apologize, come on.” The kid shook his head, pouting. “Kazuya, don’t make me angry. Apologize, now.”
“…’m sorry.”
Jin flashed the boy a bright grin, even offering him some of the chips Koki had gotten him. Pi and Ryo were in the room a moment later, having heard the boy was back, and Ueda did not only manage to make Ryo apologize as well, but also made Pi play with Jin until it was time to go back home and the man was complaining about back ache and fat kiddos.
They dedicated the rest of the evening to spoil Jin, letting him play in the bathtub, decide what dinner was going to be and even helping to make it, though he needed another bath afterward. They also let him choose what he wanted to watch on TV, as they all laid together on the bed. Ueda wanted to take it back as soon as he saw the anime movie Jin had chosen. Luckily it was soon time to send the kids to bed; at least one of them. Kazuya pouted and frowned when he saw Jin was still watching TV while he was put to bed in the living room.
“Jin’s older, he gets to stay a little longer. Come on, time for you to sleep now. Good night.”
Much to Ueda’s relieve the kid was too tired to argue further, and was asleep within minutes. Jin grinned happily at him, feeling very proud at getting to stay longer than Kazuya. However, as much as he tried staying awake, it was not even fifteen minutes later that he started to nod off. Ueda smiled, but did not say anything until Jin was finally all but curled up against him, sleeping soundly.
Ueda picked the kid up and laid him down on the couch besides Kame, laughing softly as the kid snuggled up to the youngest despite Kazuya having given him the cold shoulder all day. Next morning, though, found the kid hugging Jin tightly, smiling broadly into his… suddenly not so baby looking chest.
