Hayato thinks Yankumi has no right to tell him what being strong means, because he is the leader of Kurogin’s 3D and she is just a teacher, and teachers know nothing about fighting and pride and being strong, despite the fact that this certain one has been able to defeat him
(When Hayato learns about what Ryu has done he realizes Yankumi was right. Ryu humiliated himself for Take, protected him, and that makes him stronger than Hayato. Hayato does not like it, because he wants to protect Ryu too, but he can not if he is not stronger than him.)
Ara High does not sound that scary, and Hayato thinks he will defeat them alone and prove Yankumi - and Ryu, and all of them - that he is strong, and that he can protect them all. He does not let their laughs get to him and launches himself forward, dodging and punching, settled to win the fight.
Only they are too many, and he does not.
Hayato does not remember much from the fight - only that they were too many and he lost. He wakes up in the hospital, covered in bruises and bandages. His head hurts like hell, but he can not touch it because his arm in wrapped in a cast and he sees stars when he lifts it.
There is a doctor telling him something, but he does not care.
Hayato gets up from the bed and ignores the doctor’s surprised protests as he limps toward the corridor. It is dark behind the windows, so he guesses it is late. His friends are just in front of his bedroom, surrounding Taku and comforting him. The boy is the first to notice Hayato, and he dashes toward him. The hug hurts, but luckily Tsucchi pulls Take away before he can completely crush his older brother, though that is enough for the doctor to drag him back to bed.
Hayato grumbles, but decides to obey.
He has a broken arm, several minor injuries and more bruises and contusions than the doctors has cared to count. He is to remain in bed for a few days - not that Hayato will do it - but he can count in his blessings that his enemies had decided to stop. All the injuries will be gone in a few days.
Hayato does not say his pride will take much longer to heal.
When he goes back to school, Hayato is greeted like a hero and in a moment he has more signatures on his cast than classmates. They raise him on their shoulders and walk him around between affectionate claps on his back and loud cheering. Hayato laughs and rises his closed fist in a victory gesture, and defeat suddenly does not hurt that much any more.
It is impossible to hold any class that day, because everybody wants to know how the fight went, how Hayato taught them what Kurogin’s 3D was worth. Hayato makes up most of it, because he only remembers that they were too many, and he lost. Nobody seems to care, though, and he can see in their eyes and smiles that they are proud of him.
The eyes he wants to see the most do not turn toward him even once.
Hayato only goes to Ryu when the day is over and he is finally free from all his overly excited classmates. Ryu lies at the riverside, face turned towards the sky as he enjoys the warmth of the sun. He does not even look at him when Hayato plops down by his side, grinning.
“Ne, Ryu.” There is no answer. “Ryu?”
Ryu keeps silent as he gets up and leaves, turning his back on Hayato without a word. Hayato does not try to go after him, knows it is useless. They tell him later that Ryu was the one who found him unconscious on the ground, bleeding. The one who called the ambulance and waited with him until they arrived - and had to be given a sedative because as much as he tried to hide it he was shaking so much.
Hayato knows he has got himself into a damn fucking mess this time, and can’t even think of a way to solve it.
(It all crosses Ryu’s mind in a second, all the million terrible things that could have happened if he hadn’t arrived on time to stop the fist directed at Hayato.)
The excitement about the fight dies in a few days, and everything is normal again. Ryu is back to school, but it is like he was not there. Everybody waits for Hayato to approach him first, like some kind of signal that he is welcome again, but Hayato does not even look at him, and maybe it is better like that.
Ryu is not sure how to feel about Hayato. He misses him, he feels that he needs to get near him again; but at the same time he is so furious at him for going to fight alone, for worrying him like that. He had never been so scared in his life as when he found Hayato lying unconscious on the ground, face swolled and bloody, his arm twisted in a painful way.
Ryu had only wanted to scream when Hayato did not answer his call.
And yet Hayato is taking all of it as a silly joke. He is happy to receive everyone’s attention, to be acclaimed as a hero. He shows off his cast at any possible opportunity, and brags about the fight whenever someone asks him. But he does not turn to look at Ryu even once. Does not care about him.
Ryu can feel Hayato is not comfortable when he is around, though he tries to hide it. He glances at Ryu everytime the redhead steps into the room he is in, and he can feel the tallest’s stare boring into his nape during the lessons. The tension between them can be cut with a knife, but nobody makes a movement.
It is slowly getting too much to stand it.
It is almost two weeks later when Hayato finally dares to approach Ryu. It is early in the morning, and nobody has arrived to class yet. Hayato does not even know why he is there so early, but it does not really matter, because Ryu is there. Hayato stands before his desk, but the redhead does not look up.
“Ryu.” Silence. “Ryu. Please, Ryu. Look up.”
There is no reaction, the boy’s gaze still avoiding him, fixed onto the wall. Hayato clenches his jaw. He grabs the collar of Ryu’s uniform, lifts him and slams here against the wall. Ryu gasps as the air leaves his lungs, and tries to struggle against Hayato’s grip, to no avail.
“Ryu. Listen to me. Please. Ryu, I’m sorry. I didn’t-”
“You didn’t what, Hayato?! You didn’t want to get beaten?! You didn’t want to end up unconscious in hospital?!”
Ryu’s body is shaking, voice raw and loud. Hayato pulls him into his arms, hugging him tight as he nuzzles his neck. “I didn’t want to worry you. I’m sorry.”
The tension leaves Ryu’s body slowly as he relaxes into the taller's embrace, enjoying his musky scent. The cast around the boy’s arm is hard against his back, an uncomfortable reminder of the fight. He does not need to ask before Hayato speaks again, pushing him away a little so they can sit down again.
“I thought I could win. That I could do something... Like you did. I wanted to be stronger. To protect you.”
Ryu smiles faintly, punching Hayato’s shoulder without much emphasis. “You’re an idiot.”
(It all flashes in Hayato’s mind in the speed of a lightening, all the ways he would have had to apologize if Ryu had not been there to stop the fist directed at him.)
At the end Hayato apologizes nonetheless, and Ryu smiles faintly too.
His smile seems much broader against Hayato’s lips, though.
