“It will suit you very well, Rupert,” Quentin Travis said, pacing around the room. “You need to have a suitable excuse for being in attendance; the role of school librarian will do nicely.”
“A school. Couldn’t you find me a museum or something? Dealing with teenagers is not my idea of fun.” Giles paused, then turned to look at Travers. “Just how old is this Slayer?”
“Fifteen. Perfect age to come into her powers. You should be pleased, this is a rare privilege. We have high hopes for Miss Summers, even if what happened with Merrick was - unfortunate.”
“But she’s in...”
“California, yes, I know. All visas and everything you need have been processed.”
“So I get to be her school librarian. Don’t you think people might ask questions when a teenage girl spends a lot of time in the library?” Giles said, sarcasm dripping from every word. “Even I know that isn’t exactly a likely scenario.”
“Stop being obstructive, Rupert. Truth is, the girl needs a firm hand. She has potential, but is undisciplined. She needs... taming. Brought around to our way of thinking.”
“And I’m obviously the person for that,” Giles replied, rolling his eyes.
“Your father thought so.”
Giles tried not to flinch at the mention of his father, then sighed. It was what he’d been trained for, after all. “When does the term start?”
“I believe they call them ‘semesters’, Rupert. You are going to have to leave the British way of thinking at home, you know.”
The glare that Giles gave to Travis said it all.
