(no subject)

We're almost halfway through November. Things are happening very quickly and very slowly at the same time.

Tuesday I went to the dentist for a cleaning, and I swear, it was like a VACATION compared the day up to that point. Not only was it less stressful, but I didn't have any new cavities, AND when I went to make a payment on my balance (cavities + no dental coverage = VERY EXPENSIVE), she said I didn't owe any money! WOOHOOOO!!!! I don't even have to go back for another six months.

Anyway, things are going fairly well. We're preparing for our 10-year high school reunion on Saturday night. I went and got my hair dyed yesterday, a shocking dark brown with a lot of red in it (my dad: *double take* "How did your hair get that dark!?!?"). It's definitely the darkest my hair has ever been. I have to make sure to wear makeup to balance it out, and I'm not really used to the color yet, but I really like it. I still want to get a dress, but I don't know if that's going to happen. They've told us the dress code is "dressy casual," which is pretty vague. *shrug*

In the meantime, we finally managed to watch How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days
(from Netflix). It was rather predictable, but also funny and cute. Bryon even laughed at it a lot. Also, I wish, I just WISH I could own a dress as gorgeous as Kate Hudson's yellow dress in this movie, and also have Kate Hudson's body type so that the dress would look right on me.

I've also been reading:

- Finished I, Robot
. Loved it. It's really old school sci-fi, of the feeding-robots-paradoxes-to-fry-their-brain variety. I really, really like Isaac Asimov's writing style, and enjoyed the subject matter. It's also interesting looking at the time frame in which it was written (late 1940s). For example, most of the characters smoke. However, Asimov seems rather ahead of his time, considering the main scientist (excuse me, robopsychologist) everyone goes to for help with their robot problems is a very intelligent woman. (About my age, too. Born in 1982.)

- Also read Are You Somebody? The Accidental Memoir of a Dublin Woman
by Nuala O'Faolain. I'd had this book for YEARS, and finally decided to pull it out and read it. I enjoyed it. Her writing style is engaging and made it very hard to put the book down; however, her experiences and viewpoint contribute to the rather depressing view I've formed of Ireland in the last few years, as a nation of strict religion (and the guilt-ridden defiance of it), often-hollow marriages, and men who are almost expected to be drunks, cheaters, or both. This is a terribly negative view, but one that I'm getting from reading books by Irish writers (Maeve Binchy being the other big example). It makes me sad. Still, Nuala O'Faolain's book is a really intriguing view of how the actual Ireland of the '50s and '60s differed from the picture painted for the general public, so it's as much a history lesson as a memoir.

Now I'm back to The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
; having bought the 5-book compilation, I'm reading Mostly Harmless which wasn't included in the 4-book version I got out of the library a while back. Love it, love it, love it! I'm so sad that Douglas Adams passed away.

What else, what else? Ah yes, it's once again time for Booking Through Thursday!

Today’s question comes from Conspiracy-Girl:
I’m still relatively new to this meme so I’m not sure if this has been asked yet, but I’m curious how many of us write notes in our books. Are you a Footprint Leaver or a Preservationist?

I would say that in reading for fun, I'm a Preservationist. I prefer not to fold corners, crease the spine or make notes in my books. However, if I'm reading for a class, etc., I'm definitely a Footprint Leaver! I like to highlight, underline, and write notes in the margins. So, apparently, I'm going to give the cop-out answer, and say "both!"

...This has sure been an interesting week, and next week is going to be just as nuts. Bryon's sister and the (six) boys are coming down on Tuesday and staying through Thanksgiving weekend. Incoming!! *battens down hatches*
