After about who knows how long of picking up and putting down Les Miserables, I finished it today, and dearly regret not having finished it sooner. I think especially the last three hundred or so pages contain some of the most beautiful prose that I have ever read. It's just unbelievable, and with each passage you can just feel the compassion, warmth, and wisdom of Victor Hugo himself. I'm so glad that I stuck to my policy of not reading abridged books! I'm sure there would have been far too many wonderful things cut out. I really am kicking myself for not finishing it over winter break, especially now that I have been to places mentioned in the book like the Luxembourg Gardens and Père Lachaise, and we learned so much about Victor Hugo in my history and literature classes.
Also, Erin, you were right: I hated everyone but Jean Valjean by the end!
Speaking of books, I have to read 100 Years of Solitude for a book club a bunch of my friends formed. Has anyone else read that? I have not read much Latin American literature, so it will be good to branch out a little. Also, who can resist a little magical realism?
I've heard two pieces of very sad news today, one of which was on the news. . . I hope the man who killed the security guard at the Holocaust Museum was acting alone and not as a part of a hate group.
