*Samus threw herself into her favored couch with a sigh, silently cursing herself. How could she have been so blind? Why hadn't it ever occured to her? Barring accident, disease, and violence human lifespans could measure in centuries--longer, with cyberization or nanosurgery. Her parents were dead, certainly, but what of their parents? Had they had any siblings? Even now, did she have aunts, uncles, cousins? A cold sense of betrayal closed around her heart. The Chozo. Why hadn't the Chozo ever told her? Why had they hidden her family from her?*
*Tears welled in her eyes, but even as they did, she knew the answer. She was too well-trained to wallow in self-pity for long with a question that important in her mind. They hadn't told her because she had never asked. She barely acknowledged that her parents were human; it was too close to the thought that she might be human. Even now, she shied away from that thought. No, no, humans were weak, stupid, narrow-minded, and inevetably died. She wanted nothing to do with humanity.*
*But it was the Chozo way neither to volunteer knowledge nor withhold it, but wait until the querant was ready to seek it. The blame for her ignorance was hers alone. And that was a bitter prospect.*
