Because really, why wouldn't my Firewire port crump out on me right now?*

*The answer being, of course, that the only other alternative would be that all 3 of my hard drives as well as my CD burner fried AT THE SAME TIME. And yes, I do think the universe hates me enough right now that I have to consider that a valid option. Go on, I dare you to ( Read more... )

The Universe most assuredly DOES NOT HATE YOU.*

It MIGHT, however, be trying to tell you something.

If'n I were you, I'd ask around and find out who I ought to go to to get my cards read. Smells like "Unfinished business from the past poking itself up your ass sans lubrication and insisting on being dealt with before you can even THINK about moving forward" to me, but I could be wrong. And frequently am.

...poking itself up your ass sans lubrication...

no see, that actually sounds like a lot more fun to me.

If you have two Firewire ports, we can still get you out of this mess, but I have a sneaking suspicion that your G3 only has one. Can you describe what happened in more detail? What does the system profiler have to say about it? (Apple/About This Mac/More Info...) Have you run the Hardware Test CD yet? Take your medicine?

Yep, one crippled old lady Firewire port. I just went to plug in my hard drives, and they wouldn't mount. So I repaired my permissions, no joy. So tried mounting the drives individually, and started getting that sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach, so trotted off to get my CD burner, to find that that wouldn't mount either. Switched cords and did it all over again. No luck. Tried unplugging computer from power source and shutting down for a while (seemed more prudent than pitching it in the front yard, since the back up for my paper is on the damn firewire drive ( ... )

Yeah, sounds like your port is crapped out. Will it help if I borrow Jay's old G3 Powerbook for ya? I could bring it this weekend, assuming he hasn't found some nefarious purpose for it. We can at least get your paper off that way, via the interface of Sam's USB-equipped iPod (mine's FW only and the old G3 hasn't got a CD burner).

And I'm a tardicus, because obviously we only need the USB iPod, not the extra laptop.
