There are, in the world, three types of magic: the Old Magic, which is the magic of the earth and the element; the Wild Magic, which is the magic of living things and emotions; and the High Magic, the most powerful magic, which rules over the rest and has the ultimate authority in the universe. The Old Magic is divided into two "poles", the Light (good) and the Dark (evil), which have been in conflict for all of Time; the Dark seeks to control man and, through them, the earth, and the Light is trying to keep that from happening. The beings of the Light are also called "Old Ones", because they are Timeless and immortal and have always been among men, protecting them. The Dark has already risen and been pushed back at least once, during the time of King Arthur, but there will soon come one final attempt by the Dark to take control of the earth.

The Light does have weapons at it's desposal, the Things of Power--items of the High Magic that were either made for or claimed by the Light to use. The Things of Power are:

The Signs: Six very simple mandalas (a circle quartered by a cross, a shape naturally repellent to the Dark) that represent four elements of nature (fire, water, wood, and stone) and two elements of man (broze and iron). Together, they are the most powerful weapon the Light has against the Dark.

The Grail: Not That Grail, but one similar to it (or possibily the inspiration for it). The writing on it is one of two prophecies the Light uses as their guide to defeating the Dark.

The Golden Harp: When played, this harp has the power to protect whoever is near it from any kind of danger. It also has the power to wake the "Sleepers" who have been kept imprisoned by the Dark.

The Crystal Sword, Eirias: Though Eirias can belong to either the Light or the Dark, it's rightful place is in the hands of King Arthur's son, Bran Davies. The sword glows with blue fire in the presense of the Dark and pulls toward the sunrise. It is this sword that the Light will use to finally defeat the Dark in the end.

The Light also has two prophecies that detail how the Dark will eventually be defeated and the quest to get there. The first is relevent to all the books, but mostly The Dark is Rising, the book where Will collects all of the Signs.

When the Dark comes rising, six shall turn it back;
Three from the circle, three from the track;
Wood, bronze, iron; water, fire, stone;
Five will return, and one go alone.

Iron for the birthday, bronze carried long;
Wood from the burning, stone out of song;
Fire in the candle-ring, water from the thaw;
Six Signs the circle, and the grail gone before.

Fire on the mountain shall find the harp of gold
Played to wake the Sleepers, oldest of the old;
Power from the greenwitch, lost beneath the sea;
All shall find the light at last, silver on the tree.

The second outlines Will and Bran's task to collect the golden harp and wake the Sleepers, in The Grey King, and the final battle at the end of Silver on the Tree.

On the day of the dead, when the year too dies,
Must the youngest open the oldest hills
Through the door of the birds, where the breeze breaks.
There fire shall fly from the raven boy,
And the silver eyes that see the wind,
And the light shall have the harp of gold.

By the pleasant lake the Sleepers lie,
On Cadfan’s Way where the kestrels call;
Though grim from the Grey King shadows fall,
Yet singing the golden harp shall guide
To break their sleep and bid them ride.

When light from the lost land shall return,
Six Sleepers shall ride, six Signs shall burn,
And where the midsummer tree grows tall
By Pendragon’s sword the Dark shall fall.

Y maent yr mynyddoedd yn canu,
ac y mae’r arglwyddes yn dod.
(The mountains are singing, and the Lady comes.)
