The God of Science

Today was my very first rat sacrifice, i.e. rodent evisceration. I've never been around so many rats at one time--it was very 1984ish. So, first you anesthetize the rat, then you use scissors to cut open its belly (ventral side up; Acadeca does come in handy, occasionally), then insert a needle into its heart and draw out blood (you have to do this while alive, so that the heart continues pumping into the needle; otherwise, it's difficult), then remove the anesthesia mask from its face and use scissors to cut its head off. Proceed with usual organ harvesting practices.

It's fun stuff, this microbiology.

This afternoon, when I was running, I had a very vivid picture in my mind of exactly what was going on under my skin--liver, lungs, heart, pancreas, kidneys, mesothelium, you name it. It's a very strange feeling.
