Another half-baked fic idea, this one has actually been an interest of mine for years thanks to Alvin Schwartz's Scary Stores to Tell in the Dark trilogy, specifically the story "What is Going On Here?" in the third book.

Just putting it out there. I like to have my fic ideas written down here and there.
