#45 - I'll Tell Them I Remember You

Trinity.

Saying his name. Saying "I'm not afraid anymore." Her voice, reaching him from beyond the world, from beyond life and death, reaching him over the echo of the gunshots, over bullets tunneling through air, over Smith's sinister grin. What is he, what are they, what are bullets, what is death, compared to this, to this simple truth?

Trinity says, "I love you."

They're nothing, ghosts and dreams, flimsy cardboard cut-outs pretending to be real. They're nothing. Flimsy specters. They can not touch him. Nothing can touch him. Not here. Not now. Not with her, always by his side. Goodbye, Mr. Anderson.

Trinity says, "now get up."

Neo does.

Trinity.

The Architect is talking about "Trinity."

"Apropos, she entered the Matrix to save your life, at the cost her own."

Teeth grit. Won't scream. Denial. She can't die. She can't.

"Already, I can see the chain reaction - the chemical precursors that signal the onset of an emotion, designed specifically to overwhelm logic and reason - an emotion that is already blinding you from the simple and obvious truth."

He refuses to believe. He needs her. He's nothing without her. He runs, flees, flies, faster than sound, faster than thought, oblivious to the destruction in his wake, to the damage he has caused, is causing, will cause, oblivious to all things but her and her alone, racing and praying that he is faster than death.

"She is going to die, and there is nothing you can do to stop it."

Neo does.
