http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/05/21/obama-national-archives-s_n_206189.html This is a link to the speech Obama made today at the National Archives in Washington D.C. He basically explains that even though terrorism is a threat, we can't rely on fear or an "ad hoc" approach to dealing with the problem, but must depend on our own values and laws, while evolving how we use them so we can keep ourselves safe while still elevating the cause of liberty. From the speech:
So the record is clear: rather than keep us safer, the prison at Guantanamo has weakened American national security. It is a rallying cry for our enemies. It sets back the willingness of our allies to work with us in fighting an enemy that operates in scores of countries.
This about sums up my attitude of not only Guantanamo Bay, but also the misguided occupation and war against the people of Iraq.
I still disagree with the assertion that we can detain people for ideological reasons indefinitely (i.e., detainees who have sworn allegience to Al-Quaeda but who we have no evidence for specific wrongdoing). However, I believe this is a step in the right direction.
I hope he can see this campaign to close Guantanamo Bay through to the end. It'll be a bitter struggle, but will be worth it.
