The Character Survey of Doom, because contrary to popular belief, Natalie Adams actually has more than one dimension.

Body and Appearance
1. Describe the character's height and build. Is she heavyset, thin, short, rangy? Envy Adams is extremely skinny, blonde, and pale. She looks exactly like the unrealistic archetype for female beauty that the media admires, and she knows it. She looks a little bit like a Barbie doll...if Barbie decided to be a punk rocker with a (mostly) bad attitude.

2. How old is she? In the comic books, Envy is 25 years old as of the beginning of volume six. Movie canon is quite different, though, and I'm saying that movie-Envy is 21 because Brie Larson was born in 1989.

3. Describe her posture. Does she carry herself well or does she slouch? Envy carries herself with the sort of pride that can be smelled on a person. One could argue that she struts, especially in her entrance onstage in the movie with her sky-high red stilettos. She walks with a confidence buoyed by the attentions of her fans, her boyfriend Todd Ingram, and a certain man named Gideon Graves.

4. How is her health? Is she fit or out of shape? Any illnesses or conditions? Any physical disabilities? Envy takes very good care of her body...if you think that supermodels take good care of their bodies. She is presumably on a vegan diet to support Todd, as she was horrified at the mention that he ate chicken Parmesan, not knowing that it wasn't vegan. I can imagine that Envy regularly performs "cleanses" and "flushes," where she drinks nothing but juice for three days straight to lose a few pounds. Because of this, she is a bit on the frail side, and could not fight the way that other characters do.

5. How does she move? Is she clumsy, graceful, tense, fluid? Envy is very efficient in her movements, for lack of a better word. She doesn't move her body without purpose, whether she's onstage or off. She's more fluid than anything else, only making noise when she's wearing loud shoes.

6. How attractive is this character physically? How does she perceive herself in the mirror? Envy is hot shit, and boy, does she know it. She's attractive if you buy into what the media tells you is attractive, and if you do, boy, is Envy your girl. She has the tiniest waist ever, as if she's under a permanent corset effect. Despite her average height (5'7"), she usually wears 4-inch heels that make her skinniness all the more apparent. Which again, if it's your thing...she's got it.

7. Describe her complexion. Dark, light, clear, scarred? Very light. Airbrushed to perfection.

8. Describe her hair: color, texture, style. In the comics, Envy has straight auburn hair that sits over one of her eyes. In the movie, her hair is a bottle-bleached blonde, with at least some of it up in ponytails or pigtails. The only time we see her hair down is in brief images of photobooth pictures with Scott, where her hair is sort of lifelessly flat and unattended to.

9. What color are her eyes? Brown.

10. Does the character have any other noteworthy features? Her fingernails are usually always painted black or blue or other dark colors. She also has the power to intimidate people with a single look--or at least most people.

11. What are her chief tension centers? Hands because of her mic and keyboard work; neck; shoulders; and lower back.

Also, her knees. 8)

12. What is the character's wardrobe like? Casual, dressy, utilitarian? Bright colors, pastels, neutrals? Is it varied, or does she have six of the same suit? SO MUCH BLACK AND WHITE, WHAT IS THIS I DON'T EVEN. Envy's monochrome taste in colors, however, doesn't mean that she necessarily wears boring things. She's into corset dresses, minidresses, comfy coats, and heels: the taller, the better. She has extremely expensive taste in clothing, and would happily drop $600 on just one piece of an outfit.

13. Do her clothes fit well? Does she seem comfortable in them? They do. And yes, yes she does, though how anyone can be comfortable in those shoes she wore at the secret show is so beyond me.

14. Does she dress the same on the job as she does in her free time? If not, what are the differences? Pretty much the same. While Envy is more of a persona and Natalie the real person, Envy sees no reason to separate the two in her everyday life.

15. You knew it was coming: Boxers, briefs or commando? Neither. Envy actually likes boyshort underwear quite a bit and will wear them if her dresses are long enough; if not, thongs are her default.

Speech
1. What does this character's voice sound like? High-pitched, deep, hoarse? Very high-pitched. Envy's singing voice can be heard here, to give you a better idea of how high we're talking here. It's not animated chipmunk high, but she's definitely not singing lowly, either. I'd peg her at mezzo-soprano, but I'm not musically inclined so don't hold me accountable. (If you are, let me know where her range is I will love you foreverrr)

2. How does she normally speak? Loud, soft, fast, evenly? Does she talk easily, or does she hesitate? Envy speaks slowly, but deliberately. When she is focused on a conversation, every word has bite, substance, and purpose. She can destroy Scott Pilgrim's emotional state with a few well-placed barbs, and shut Julie up with a dismissive statement.

3. Does the character have a distinct accent or dialect? Any individual quirks of pronunciation? Any, like, you know, verbal tics? Envy's dialect is actually standard Californian English (but without, like, all the, like, valley girl "likes"). Mun knows this because both she and Brie Larson are Californian. Stay strong.

4. What language/s does she speak, and with how much fluency? Just English. Envy needs interpreters for tours abroad.

5. Does she switch languages or dialects in certain situations? She slows down a bit for emphasis ("You should so. Totally. Come."), but other than that, nope.

6. Is she a good impromptu speaker, or does she have to think about her words? Envy is able to improvise all her hateful words without very little time at all, but there are a couple times when she's had to pause to gather her thoughts (i.e., after Todd is headbutted into a bunch of coins).

7. Is she eloquent or inarticulate? Under what circumstances might this change? She's in between. While you won't see her busting out gems from the Oxford English Dictionary anytime soon, she isn't as bad as, well, Todd.

Mental and Emotional
1. How intelligent is this character? Is she book-smart or street-smart? I would argue that Envy is probably very intelligent, as she utilizes resources around her to learn about other people's circumstances (i.e., knowing about Scott and Ramona before she was in Toronto for even a day). That sort of makes her more street smart. I doubt she's picked up a book since she became Envy, though I can imagine Natalie read a lot, both manga and otherwise.

2. Does she think on her feet, or does she need time to deliberate? Combination of both.

3. Describe the character's thought process. Is she more logical, or more intuitive? Idealistic or practical? One of Envy's major flaws is her intuitive, idealistic thought process. I believe that Natalie was a bit more hesitant and deliberate due to her quiet nature (as seen when she asks Todd to prove his love to her at some point before volume 3). But Envy is not like that at all. She believes in concepts like fame, success, and love wholeheartedly. She is also very naive when it comes to relationships with the boys she chooses after Scott, as Todd was cheating on her and Gideon didn't really love her at all. Despite those flaws, she loved both men very much and didn't realize until after their deaths that losing them was for the best.

4. What kind of education has the character had? Natalie and Scott met at the University of Toronto freshman year, so it's known that she did well enough in high school to go to college, but the books never mention if Natalie actually graduated. I play her as a college dropout: she may have gotten most of her general education done, but that's about it. She would have to decide on a major if she ever returns.

5. What are her areas of expertise? What, if anything, is she interested in learning more about? Bitchiness 101? But all kidding aside, Envy is a talented singer and somewhat decent pianist/keyboardist. Her goals include learning how to play the piano to further her career and return to her former self, as I think Natalie could do very well with piano.

6. Is she an introvert or an extrovert? Former introvert turned overly extrovert.

7. Describe the character's temperament. Is she even-tempered or does she have mood swings? Cheerful or melancholy? Laid-back or driven? MOOD SWINGS OH CHRIST. Envy is always on an emotional roller coaster that most girls only experience during PMS. She's overly driven to rock every house she's in and make sure she's known nationwide, but she also has her limits, as seen during her extreme over-working under Gideon's command.

8. How does she respond to new people or situations? Is she suspicious, relaxed, timid, enthusiastic? Suspicious. Envy never assumes the best of people, and usually always assumes the worst. When Knives Chau, a huge fan of Envy's, tried to tell her that she read her blog and admires her ("you're my role model"), Envy simply ignored her. When she got "annoying," she had Todd (Lynette in the book) punch the highlights out of Knives' hair. No person who thinks about others fairly ever does that. Ever.

9. Is she more likely to act, or to react? REACT.

10. Which is her default: fight or flight? Flight. She is a skinny thing, what are you crazy.

11. Describe the character's sense of humor. Does she appreciate jokes? Puns? Gallows humor? Bathroom humor? Pranks? She appreciates jokes at other people's expense. Always.

12. Does the character have any diagnosable mental disorders? If yes, how does she deal with them? Nope!

13. What moments in this character's life have defined her as a person? Natalie's been defined by her introduction to anime (in freshman year of high school), meeting Scott in freshman year, and playing with Kid Chameleon. Envy's been defined by her relationship with Todd Ingram, touring with her band the Clash at Demonhead, and her eventual "relationship" with Gideon Graves.

14. What does she fear? People not being jealous of her. People moving on from her (i.e. Scott). Girls who might be prettier than her. Being cheated on. Not being treated with respect.

15. What are her hopes or aspirations? To become the most famous indie singer that EVER LIVED EVER. Also, getting a Grammy and being with Gideon forever. Of which only two are possible. :/

16. What is something she doesn't want anyone to find out about her? Sometimes, she actually misses being Natalie V. Adams.

Relationships
1. Describe this character's relationship with her parents. Natalie would have been very respectful towards her parents and would have tried to make them proud. Now, they're lucky if their daughter Envy calls them once a month.

2. Does the character have any siblings? What is/was their relationship like? None. She was an only child, but not very demanding as a baby or even a child or a teenager.

3. Are there other blood relatives to whom she is close? Are there ones she can't stand? She has some family in Edmonton and some in Maine and Michigan. She usually only sees them around Christmas.

4. Are there other, unrelated people whom she considers part of her family? What are her relationships with them? She considers her boyfriends part of her family...until she kicks them out of her heart.

Scott: Liked him when she was Natalie. Loved him, even. But he was too--plain, lacking, boring for Envy. Post-series, they are somewhat friendly with each other, and she hopes to be a genuine friend (but nothing more) to Scott in the future.

Todd: Childhood friends who were separated when his dad shipped him off to Vegan Academy. She was very fond of him, and he was her first friend, so she was very apprehensive when he suggested that they date. But after he punched a hole in the moon for her, she was sold and considered him to be her "real" family...until he was screwing Lynette behind her back. Then things got nasty.

Lynette: Considered her a surrogate sister until she discovered that Lynette seduced Todd. Oh, hell no. She still gives Lynette death glares to this day.

Gideon: What hasn't he been to Envy? She can go to him for anything because he can get anything for her. But one thing he wasn't to her--and one thing she wanted him to be--was her lover. Their relationship was built on mutual desire for what the other had, but not for the people themselves. Despite that, she clung hard to him until his death, even asking if Gideon was okay after he smashed her former boyfriend's face in. Go figure.

5. Who is/was the character's best friend? How did they meet? See above sections.

6. Does she have other close friends? Loool, not really. Envy is too judgmental to have friends who don't give her something back. Natalie, however, will attempt to recreate relationships that she tossed aside once she assumed the Envy persona.

7. Does she make friends easily, or does she have trouble getting along with people? Loool, so the second one. WHY SO JUDGMENTAL, ENVY

8. Which does she consider more important: family or friends? Pffft, friends.

9. Is the character single, married, divorced, widowed? Has she been married more than once? She doesn't like being single, that's for sure. She's hopped around from guy to guy after each breakup, hoping to find someone that can stick.

10. Is she currently in a romantic relationship with someone other than a spouse? Depending on the timeline, either Scott, Todd, or Gideon. Or no one at all!

11. Who was her first crush? Who is her latest? Todd was actually her first, but she never got the chance to tell him before he left for Vegan Academy, and he had also been dating Ramona Flowers before he left. Latest was Gideon.

12. What does she look for in a romantic partner? Strength, ability to provide support for her. When she was Natalie, she liked having someone who accepted her quiet tendencies but also brought her voice out, like Scott did.

13. Does the character have children? Grandchildren? If yes, how does she relate to them? If no, does she want any? NO AND NO. NO KIDS EVER NO.

14. Does she have any rivals or enemies? FFFFFFFFFF RAMONA FLOWERS >O

15. What is the character's sexual orientation? Where does she fall on the Kinsey scale? Meh, I think she's like a 1. Envy is pretty boy crazy, but if she got smashed, she wouldn't say no to a girl.

16. How does she feel about sex? How important is it to her? She liiiiikes it.

It's a pretty big deal to her, but she also recognizes how important it is to not get crazy with that kind of stuff right away. I can imagine that she waited quite a bit with Scott because she was still Natalie, but threw those concerns away with Todd. (And regrets doing so.)

17. What are her turn-ons? Turn-offs? Weird bedroom habits?
ENVY'S
Ons: power, money (oh God she sounds like a gold digger ugh), massages, pretty light BDSM (and you bet she's on top)
Offs: bad smells, poor social skills (by her own standards), both anything ~too vanilla~ and anything ~too crazy~

Idk if I will ever fully develop a list like this for Natalie, but...I can imagine she was more than a little flexible if she was hardcore into anime. We'll leave it at that. XD

Beliefs
1. Do you know your character's astrological (zodiac of choice) sign? How well does she fit type? Envy's birthdate is never given; Brie Larson's is November 1, so we will compare those to Envy.

Scorpio: The introversion and sensitivity of a water sign definitely matches Natalie. This page in particular also highlights Envy's characteristics.

Being 25 means that comic Envy was born in 1985 (Ox), while Brie Larson was born in 1989 (Snake).

Ox: Dependable, ambitious, calm, methodical, born leader, patient, hardworking, conventional, steady, modest, logical, resolute, tenacious. Can be stubborn, dogmatic, hot-tempered, narrow-minded, materialistic, rigid, demanding.

Positive adjectives are pretty Nataliesque; negative are definitely Envy.

Snake: Deep thinker, wise, mystic, graceful, soft-spoken, sensual, creative, prudent, shrewd, elegant, cautious, responsible, calm, strong, constant, purposeful. Can be loner, bad communicator, possessive, hedonistic, self-doubting, distrustful, mendacious, suffocating, cold.

Same here. WAY TO GO, ASTROLOGY

2. Is this character religious, spiritual, both, or neither? How important are these elements in her life? Looool, neither. Envy strikes me as a sort of evangelist of...herself, really, especially with the way she sways and leads the audience in clapping when she does her show in the movie. She is the head of the Church of the Clash at Demonhead, later the Church of Envy, and she is its priestess, its center, its sacrifice.

3. Does this character have a personal code of morals or ethics? If so, how did that begin? What would it take to compromise it? Pffft, no. Nothing is too below Envy, except perhaps actually taking someone's life, as she seems to be pretty shaken by deaths in the series. She digs being a mean girl, though.

4. How does she regard beliefs that differ from hers? Is she tolerant, intolerant, curious, indifferent? SO INTOLERANT I DON'T EVEN

5. What prejudices does she hold? Are they irrational or does she have a good reason for them? So irrational. Against people who aren't worthy of her. Which is a lot of people.

Daily Life
1. What is the character's financial situation? Is she rich, poor, comfortable, in debt? SO RICH AHHH. Being signed by Gideon Graves tends to do that to you.

2. What is her social status? Has this changed over time, and if so, how has the change affected her? From anime nerd to indie superstar. Turned her from a nice, sweet girl into a raging bitch. Hooray!

3. Where does she live? House, apartment, trailer? Is her home her castle or just a place to crash? What condition is it in? Does she share it with others? She kind of lives in a traveling trailer that has so much stuff it makes most RVs look bare. She roomed there with Todd and Lynette until they both left the band and she had it all to herself.

4. Besides the basic necessities, what does she spend her money on? CLOTHES CLOTHES CLOTHES SHOES CLOTHES KEYBOARDS CLOTHES CLOTHES CLOTHES

5. What does she do for a living? Is she good at it? Does she enjoy it, or would she rather be doing something else? Sings for Clash at the Demonhead. So good at it. Digs it. Wants to be in music forever and go down in history, like Madonna.

6. What are her interests or hobbies? How does she spend her free time? She spends her free time getting back at people, being a bitch, lusting after her current boy toy, etc.

7. What are her eating habits? Does she skip meals, eat out, drink alcohol, avoid certain foods? Alcohol + occasional flushes + vegan foods = yay Envy's diet! So sparse. So terrifying.

Associations
Which of the following do you associate with the character, or which is her favorite:

1. Color? Green. She never wears it, actually, but that is the color of jealousy and so it shall be!
2. Smell? Bath & Body Works' Dark Kiss. The vanilla and amber notes are faint and therefore very Natalie, while the other notes seem so overwhelming and dark and sexy and Envy.
3. Time of day? Midnight, full moon.
4. Season? Winter.
5. Book? The Sailor Moon manga series for Natalie. Envy doesn't read, but...Invisible Monsters by Chuck Palahniuk.
6. Music? Metric. xP
7. Place? New York City.
8. Substance? Natalie: water, Envy: fire.
9. Plant? Natalie: baby's breath, Envy: dark roses.
10. Animal? Natalie: baby kitten (DON'T LAUGH OKAY SHE TOTALLY IS ONE), Envy: snow leopard. AWWW YEAH.
