I can't believe that such a small town as Alstead has been hit so hard with flooding. My summer cottage is in that town, and I just heard that it survived the flood (it was on the opposite side of the breached dam on Lake Warren.) However, 3 people are dead, and anywhere between 14 people are still missing. I spent a joyous week driving around the ( Read more... )

I think everyone pretty much assumed that this would never happen to us. It would have been one thing if it was a freaking hurricane or something, but it was just a rainstorm. One minute I'm sitting in my friend's room playing some X-Men game at 5 in the morning, the next minute his mom is pounding on the door saying we need to move the cars because the house has a fucking moat.

I'm all for helping the people who need help, but aside from that, I think the only thing we can do in the face of disaster (I really hate calling it that right after two hurricanes devastated the Gulf Coast, but I guess it still qualifies) is to laugh about it. There were almost no casualties, and most of the damage was to roads and public works and not to private homes (I believe, correct me if I'm wrong). Sure, it sucks for the people who lost loved ones or valuables, but I had one fucking awesome weekend. I'm not trying to sound callous, but things could have been a lot worse, and we're New Englanders. We're rugged. We'll make it. Nature pulls shit like this on us all the time (just not usually flooding) and we shake our fists into the air and laugh in her face.

But anyways, I fully support donating money to people (and also to towns) to help with reconstruction. This is definitely going to take a while to fix, because we all know how long it takes construction crews to fix even one road that doesn't need to be repaired. I wonder how long it will even take them to start fixing roads in the smaller towns.

On the news, they showed the foundations of houses that had been completely swept away on 123 and 123A in Alstead... it was pretty fucked up. But I do agree with most of what you had to say. The flooding in NH is certainly dwarfed by Katrina and Rita, but at the same time, the area is much more close to me on many levels.
