It had been almost two weeks since Jon had returned from the Dawn Treader expedition to Susan's less-than-warm welcome, and things between them had not improved a great deal. It was making Susan heartsick, and she had long had enough of them being at odds with each other. She had never been one for confrontation or conflict--she was the gentle one of the family, after all--and the chilliness between them upset her, though she didn't know how to put an end to it.
The boys had moved into their almost-completed hut next door, Lucy was already in bed, and Susan had just fed Rickon and put him down for the night, so the house was quiet for the first time in a while. She was getting ready for bed herself when she saw Jon in the bedroom doorway. She didn't want to let another night pass without them resolving things. "Can we talk?" she said hesitantly. She stole a glance at Rickon asleep in his cradle, but he didn't stir; he was sleeping the solid sleep of a baby with a full tummy and a clean diaper. It wasn't likely he would wake and disturb them, so now was as good a time as any.
