Wyverary book sculpture

My artistic strengths tend towards writing and music, but with the fairly short deadline, and being somewhat adventurous (see also: foolish) I decided to try something I've never done before.  I was inspired by the book-cut sculptures of Su Blackwell, but veered in a different direction by depending more on the book cover than the paper.  The Wyverary is one of the most charming characters I've read about, so I knew I wanted to do something with him.  I found an almost perfect book to create A-Through-L at the used bookstore.

Quite a few pics, as it was difficult just to take a couple shots of him, being that he is sort of straddling the line between 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional.

The chain being around the book is somewhat symbolic, but mainly I did not want to damage his delicate wings!

Here's a closeup of his head.  Funny how book spines and reptiles have similar textures, no?  ;)

As you can see, his wings DO have something about balloons written on them...

I wish I would have had time to do more paper details, but there it is!
