She needed to escape the confines of four walls. She needed to be vertical and to stretch her legs. She's still really sick and she just lets her legs carry her without though. She's wearing too much clothing for the warm island weather--long, knit pants that ripple in the breeze and a wool sweater that she has pulled closed over her middle. Her waistline is entirely gone and her clothes barely hide baby belly. As she stands on the beach at the water's edge with the water licking at her bare toes, she can feel the baby moving, turning over and over. But she doesn't move her arms from where they're crossed over her chest. She stares out at the horizon for a long while, wondering if she has the strength to swim. Dropping her hands to her sides, she slowly wades out into the water.
