Fish CSA

A friend and I joined this fish CSA. Basically we’ll get 4-6 pounds of select ground fish for the next 8 weeks. The fish on offer are Pollack, Hake and Haddock, all fished from hook and line. We are assuming they are not offering cod because of the optics, there is a limited fishery or really they are permitted to land the by-catch, even though cod is commercially endangered; and more than likely they are not offering halibut because it can get a better price sold more traditionally.

The fish is landed in Digby and brought in to the city on Thursday afternoons. The fishermen who went out are there, and so you can talk to them directly and for the first two weeks, they have filleting demonstrations. The fish is more expensive than what I’d get at the grocery store, but most of the money goes directly to the fishermen (the standard percentage goes to the CSA administration).

Today I picked up five pounds of Haddock, or 3 whole fish. Once home I attempted to fillet two of them, and wrapped the third fish up for BBQ tomorrow. I did a poor, poor filleting job. While I think I got most of the meat, it was all in little pieces. I would not be hired in a kitchen with that showing. Luckily I’ll have 3 more weeks of fish for practice. As for cooking, my fish to rice to onion ration was off, but I’ll get to practice that as well.

It is probably a good thing I don’t have a deep freezer, as I toyed with keeping the fish heads, for the labs I’ll be teaching this fall. The students could do eye and gill dissections! Ok, typing that out makes me regret composting the heads.

On the bike front- I opted to get my bike repaired and when I went to pick it up, they showed me pretty, pretty, designed for the city bikes. I see a test ride in my future.
