Ji Yong finally had a girlfriend. Something he wouldn’t let anyone forget. Bom ignored him as she sat in the studio, waiting for her turn in the recording booth. She rolled her eyes as he invited Young Bae to come bowling with them.

“Now all you need to do is get a girlfriend so you’re not the third wheel.”

She couldn’t stop her eyes from rolling a second time as Young Bae just said he was taking his time.

“You should stop antagonizing him. Not everyone can get around like you.” Bom was already poised to switch places with Seung Hyun in the booth and she shoved past him as he made his way out.

“What’s her problem?” his low voice grumbled before he became distracted by the chocolate cake that laid out on the table for Seung Ri’s birthday. It was his second birthday cake and everyone had known he wouldn’t be in the studio that day. They had all simply wanted to pacify the sweet tooth shared among them. Not that Bom could have any, she had been sulking about her diet all day and Ji Yong hadn’t made it any better, shoving a huge chunk of the dessert in his mouth while staring her in the face.

What a jerk! Bom didn’t expect him to have kept his annoying personality. She thought he’d outgrow it. Of course, what made it worse is that she had always loved it despite herself. She tried to put thoughts of him aside as they started to record. Ji Yong stared at her through the glass.

Why doesn’t he just text his stupid girlfriend instead of sending judgments my way? His still face made her uneasy and angry and just…She couldn’t find the word but she just wanted to forget. She wanted to forget how long they’d known each other. She wanted to forget how happy his girlfriend made him and how she’d never be that girl and how he could eat chocolate cake and she couldn’t and she was the one who needed the therapy of sugar to pacify this crack in her heart that had only been getting wider with every mention of ‘whatsherface’.

She had done good enough vocally to go home but she knew she’d have to re-record. She could've done better if it hadn’t been for stupid Kwon Ji Yong, staring at her, a minuscule bit of chocolate pressed on the side of his lip. She took her coat in a huff and left.

“Good work, everyone,” she said the custom words quickly and insincerely. She walked along the pavement and felt the cold of air against her face; encouraging tears she hadn’t known were there. She heard light footsteps behind her and knew they were Ji Yong’s, his feet more graceful than anyone else’s. She wanted to stop and wait for him to catch up like she usually had while they were doing trainee work but now…Now, he was debuting and now, he had a girlfriend and lately he hadn’t even spoken to her much at all.

“Yah!” he called after her.

She kept walking, trying to push tears back just in case he pushed it and actually insisted walking her home but it was wishful thinking. He probably had plans with that stupid girl of his.

“Nuna! Eodi ga yo!?”

Where am I going? Away from you. Away from your eyes… So you won’t see me cry.

She could tell he caught up as she heard his breath and footsteps right behind her.

“I can’t believe you’re getting this mad over a piece of cake!” he spoke angrily, sparking her anger even more and she turned around, no longer being able to hold back her tears and she spoke as she shoved him which each exclamation.

“You think this is about cake!? This isn’t about cake! This is about you! This about you and your stupid girlfriend! And you can’t shut up! You won’t shut up and just let me forget! I’m sorry that I like you and it makes me mad that you have someone else! Maybe that’s a stupid reason…Maybe I should hate you for the cake instead. Maybe that would make more sense!”

Ji Yong kept his footing steady until her barrage of shoves had ended. The fog of her breath reminded him of the cold and he suddenly remembered he had run after her without his coat. He felt the cold rip through him as the sky loomed a deep gray, threatening snowfall. He simply looked at her as she watched him for some kind of reaction and she felt even worse now, which she didn’t know was possible. He reached his hand out and placed a brown lock of her hair behind her ear, letting his hand trail down to her jacket’s zipper.

“My hands are cold. Remember? The last time…” He spoke lowly as he unzipped her coat and placed his hand inside. She looked down to the ground being unable to meet his stare. He placed his cold hands on her sides like he had before.

“Noona, do you remember?” He repeated. His voice was low and it made her body tremble. She looked up at him, a snowflake falling on her eyelid. She stared at him and just wanted him. She kissed him, feeling the warmth between them pacify the cold their skin had felt moments before. She opened her eyes as their lips parted and Ji Yong chuckled. That chuckle, she remembered it and then felt the same irritation she always had.

“Bweoh? What’s so funny?”

He leaned down and whispered in her ear, “Pabo.”

He hadn’t done it in a while but she hadn’t missed it, and it wasn’t the cold but the feel of his breath near her neck that caused her to blush.

“Wae!? Don’t call me that!”

“Nega joh-a. You couldn’t tell then?”

Bom turned red. I like you, he had said. She had forgotten the kiss or the way she had ignored the glances he darted her way in the following weeks and eventually, the way they had faded.

“Well, what about your girlfriend.”

“She broke up with me. I thought I’d win her back but…”

“But what?” Bom looked up at him anticipating an answer.

“Well, why substitute when you can have the real thing?” He brought his hands from her jacket and rubbed them together before putting them on her face, attempting to warm her up a bit. She brought her arms around him.

“And all those plans you had with her…”

“Were fake… And simply to get your attention... Since, you had stopped caring about your dongsaeng…” He smirked but then became bashful as he thought about how vulnerable the admission made him and he looked to the ground next to them. She laughed and he became even redder than the cold and his prior embarrassment had made him. She stood on her toes and brought her mouth to whisper in his ear as the snow continued to fall.

“Pabo…”

She hugged him as she continued. All of a sudden despite the fact he wore no coat and the snow swirled around them for the first time it had ever come down on Seoul that year, he couldn’t feel a degree of cold.

“Nega joh-a,” she said quietly.
