mod post: the future of the community

Jan 28, 2009 14:33

As you may have noticed, activity on omniocular has been very sparse for several months. We have been shamefully negligent moderators, and the low number of new contributions and minimal participation when we last held monthly challenges (quite a while ago, we admit) suggests to us there is simply not the same degree interest as there was when we began omniocular a ( Read more... )

I feel odd commenting because I am not a member of the community, but I have posted here and would like to again. I enjoyed writing for both the July and August challenge. I would like to write for the June challenge, but the closing dates have passed and it doesn't look like it would be within the rules of the community for nonmembers to post after a challenge ends. Have you considered changing this? At the moment there is no way for new interested writers and artists to post in the community. I don't know how you would feel about allowing nonmembers to post freely. Perhaps that will change the nature of the community too much?

I have no opinion on allowing contributions from other fandoms, though I am only interested in reading and posting in the HP fandom. The nature of the community and its interests should be the property of the actual members.

If you claimed a prompt for June, feel free to write it and drop me or ignipes a line to let us know. We happily accept late submissions from both members and nonmembers. If not, we periodically have "spring cleaning" type challenges to encourage people to finish unfinished challenge fics/art, and also reopen older challenges to people who may have missed them the first time around.

With the future of the comm in limbo right now, I'm not sure when or if the next Spring Cleaning challenge will be, but I just wanted to let you know there's a good chance you'll be able to participate even if you didn't make a claim. We'll certainly keep both members and nonmembers updated about whatever decision we make concerning the future of the comm.

Well I've always appreciated the gen focus of this community, though I know I've been wildly biased toward the art posted rather than the fics.

I would actually enjoy seeing this community expanded to include other fandoms. I lot of fandoms lack a gen focused place to post and that might actually revitalize this community (I know I'm doing gen in other fandoms personally ^^). Actually one thing in that favor is I know a lot of people here and I'm interested in the art/fic regardless of fandom (in some fic cases and all art cases) so I would be interested in seeing what else people here are doing as far as gen goes.

I do like the monthly challenges though I know I stink at participating (I think I've done one 0.o) but the challenges are fun to see.

Whatever decision is made I hope this community stays around as its been my fave HP comm outside of HP_fringeart.

You could open membership up to everyone who's interested. I have gen fic on my personal journal which wasn't written for challenges here, but that I would quite like to post to a community.

Personally, I'm all in favour of gen communities, because gen can be wonderful, but it often gets overlooked for not being all about teh sex. I'd have nothing against opening it up to other fandoms, either.

I've enjoyed being part of the community, but I've largely moved on from HP fandom, so I'd be interested in having the community opened up to other fandoms. I was just talking to someone recently about the fact that there's no gen Merlin community, for instance.

Wouldn't the Merlin fandom want their own genfic community?

I know if I were in Merlin fandom I'd be more interested in following a comm that was for Merlin fic only, rather than having to wade through fics from the 8 million anime (and other) fandoms that would also end up here.

Well, I expect there will be one, sooner or later; there's just not one yet, and there will always be new fandoms popping up that don't have gen comms yet, and so I can see the point of a multifandom gen community. YMMV.

I have never posted, but often commented here as a reader. I would wish for this community to keep existing as a quality forum of gen fic, not necessarily restricted to the HP fandom. In other words, I second tree_and_leaf.
