Nymphadora Tonks knew there was something wrong with Remus Lupin as he stood outside the Burrow, leaning against the post. She had told Molly and Arthur that the first night of the change was always the worst. But this was different. He was more alert, staring into the field as if expecting for something to hop out.
Then disaster struck. Bellatrix Lestrange, her dear cousin, Apparated into the Burrow's line of sight. Harry buzzed by them all despite trying to hold him back. Remus followed, ever loyal to James, even in death. Tonks followed after him, loyal to Remus despite his hesitancy. They were stopped by the ring of fire one of the Death Eaters had conjured. Ginny came out of nowhere and leaped through an opening in the fire. Tonks could barely hear what had prompted Harry into the field, "I killed Sirius Black!"
Surprisingly, Remus and herself made it across the fire and went in search of Harry and Ginny. Bellatrix had stopped her chant and the field was silent except for their footfalls. Within moments, they found the children on an island in the water and joined them in a defensive position. They were then barraged by spells from all directions. Tonks fired spell after spell in haste decision but was only comforted by the light graze of touch she received from Remus.
Almost as suddenly as the fight began, it ceased. Tonks looked to the sky to see several Death Eaters Apparate from their scene to the Burrow. They began to run once more in the direction of the home. Despite all her Auror training, she was beginning to grow scared. The Death Eaters she could handle but losing Remus was a different story. And at that moment, the idea of that may soon turn to reality.
When they reached the Burrow, it was already in flames. She couldn't help but have sympathy for Molly and Arthur. She stood next to Remus and without thought, their hands entwined as they watched the unstoppable blaze.
The war had reached home.
