Striker: "Your country needs you." Logan: "I'm Canadian."

Saw Wolverine Friday morning. Here's my thoughts...

I was always fond of the X-Men franchise growing up, so when the prospect of them coming to the big screen first came to fruition, I was absolutely excited. Three movies later, there's a nasty taste in my mouth. You'd think after that crap-fest known as X-Men 3, I would have stayed away from seeing any more X-Men related films. But being a Wolverine fanatic, I gave this spinoff the benefit of the doubt.

What made this movie pass? Albeit certain liberties (I'll allow the sibling instances), it stayed true to the source material. The title sequence involving Wolverine's progression through time was also a nice touch and the Weapon X project was just as I anticipated it to be.

Where did it fail? My only real gripe concerns Fox's poor marketing strategy. If you want to include more characters, don't bill them so arbitrarily (I'm lookin' at you, Cyclops). Gambit and Deadpool were probably the only ones that deserved a nod, but still, the movie's supposed to be about WOLVERINE!!!

Sorry for going a little fanboy there...

Anyway, a lot of the reviews I'd read thus far have leaned towards the negative side, but then again, everyone seems to be hell bent on comparing any comic film released thus far to a caliber equivalent of The Dark Knight. That's a good measuring stick, to a certain degree.

Of course, there's also that sentiment of various critics severely connecting it to the trilogy. If you noticed, not once did I ever call this movie X-Men Origins: Wolverine. In my opinion, this is a stand alone movie and I refuse mention that prefix, because doing so connects the film with that dying franchise. If critics were to see it like that, I think the reception would have been different. But then again, that's just my two cents.

Whoops, I went a little fanboy again...

Overall, I thought it was great comic book flick. Gotta give props to Hugh Jackman for actually putting effort into this film.

One more thing: apparently there's different bonus endings after the credits. Some theaters (like mine) got a bar scene, while others were treated to a potential spinoff. This is probably Fox's attempt to regain lost earnings due to that leaked copy. Clever move, but still a failed marketing strategy. Save it for the DVD, 'cause I sure as hell ain't paying another $8.50 for a 50/50 chance at seeing the alternate bonus ending.
