It's common programmer tech speak to talk about 'walking' data structures, meaning following all the pointers around to put all the data back together again. I think that 'brachiation' is a more apt metaphor, and fits well with the concept of 'code monkey'.

Many years ago I was presented with an interesting puzzle. I did not solve it. I had to be told the answer. It is a very simple answer, but it isn't dumb. Figuring it out requires a significant leap of lateral thinking.

I named the computer I'm using for tazfrog's firewall 'Santa'. It decides who's naughty or nice. :-) Also, it fits in with the ' childhood fear' theme for the names of my other computers. The kid that bursts into tears on Santa's lap is afraid.

I like the fact that it twists something cheerful and bright into something dark with a fearful edge to it. ( Read more... )

A little scary, very amusing, geeky and silly all at the same time.

The most recent Order of the Stick strip is utterly hilarious. Sadly, it's only hilarious if you've been following the cartoon for awhile and know the characters. OTOH, it's a great cartoon if you're into D&D at all.

Coats are marsupials. The only thing is, I've never found little coats in the pockets of my coats. But I have found hats and gloves. Maybe that's where my hats and gloves go when I misplace them. They've grown up into adult coats.

It is amazing how much mirth has been generated by exposing people at work to the word 'widdershins'.
