Don't get me wrong, I love them, even the ones I don't fully understand. But I hate that other people write them off just because they're sports. Entertainment, all entertainment, is not as important as math or science, so we should all drop what we love doing and go do some calculus and work for NASA. 9_9
I get that some people don’t like sports, I do. They’re not for everyone, nor do I expect them to be. But to write them off as inherently less important than science... that’s a little too far, I think.
Don’t get me wrong, science is incredibly important, and what we can do with the technology we have - and the technology we will have - is nothing short of astounding, and god damn MAGIC compared to where we were a century ago. But entertainment is equally important, no matter what that entertainment is (if it harms none (or, if it harms, that you have permission (and trust and respect and a safeword). Because there are people like that)).
What’s happening in the Olympics, or any sporting event, no matter where it is and no matter what the scale or level of competition, is good for humanity. It’s just a different kind of good than landing Curiosity safely on Mars. Advancing humanity - pushing the limits of what we know and what we can do, exercising and challenging the brain and the body - is the end result, and a damn fine one no matter how you get there.
