El Orfanato, Friday Night Lights, Death Note, and shopping

I haven't been getting the sleep I should, because: movies! Shopping! Going out for no good reason! FREEEEEEEEEEEDOOOOOOOM. First, I dug out some of the movies I've burned but never watched.

El Orfanato (The Orphanage)

A woman brings her family back to her childhood home, where she opens an orphanage for handicapped children. Before long, her son starts to communicate with an invisible new friend.

Watched this as recommended by
Tian, and it really is something to recommend. Mia and I were hooked from the opening credits.

The haunted-house mood is excellently set, without pushing everything into your face. Graphic horror is kept to a minimum, yet Mia and I spent most of our time cowering behind pillows. It's the ideas presented that are truly horrific, transcending the language barrier. Anyway, I hesitate to tell you more because spoilers are the devil's work. So go watch it for yourself.

Friday Night Lights

Soundtrack. Glorious. What.

Death Note

Jaime burned me a copy like a year ago but I only watched it now, with my sister. Mia has some of the manga, and from the synopses I read, the film pretty much follows the main plot of the manga. I like the murder mystery aspect of it! But some parts of the movie are obviously poorly researched. Who dies from a heart attack flailing around like some poor soul on the ship Nostromo? That would cause more pain! Most victims lie still, or writhe around a little, but not flail.

And seriously. What FBI agent holds a gun like this:

so gangsta! *facepalm*
Honestly, none of the characters are likeable, least of all Light. (I realize this is probably very different in the manga.) Light's dad is possibly the only decent character. He reminds me a bit of Jim Gordon.

Anyway, it was okay for one viewing. Considering the popularity of the manga, the film was probably a poor adaptation.

Also, belated birthday shopping:

My shiny black Passport Essential! They didn't have it red (boooo), but I got a goooood price at Ynzal. 320 extra gigs of awesomeness, just in time for fall season premieres. The background is a really cute laptop sleeve I got off Multiply. :D
