It's certainly not because of their annoying penchant for making a dozen lists a week ranging from "Greatest Space Flick" to "Greatest Flick Featuring an Overweight Marlon Brando" (if they can't figure out how to create salient content when Lost is of the air, making a list is the next best thing). The reason works in conjunction with why TV Guide is completely irrelevant now: Michael Ausiello.
Michael Ausiello has officially been on staff for EW for two weeks now and the impact is apparent. I doubt TV Guide will find a writer and spoilerhound as charismatic, capable and smurftastic as Ausiello unless somehow they're able to steal away Kristen Dos Santos from E!. It's not just the fact that Ausiello is with EW, but it's who he's sharing an office with that can be so great for the future.
I was thinking about this last week when he made his debut, briefly imagining what interesting staff couplings could be made. The obvious combination made itself apparent pretty quickly especially today in the Ask Ausiello column when a reader asks about Lost and without hesitation brought out the good Doc Jensen to comment on a tiny bit of Lost Scoop with his wonderfully overthought views on the matter!
Thank you EW for making room for Ausiello in your offices. I may even pick up a subscription again! Other reasons why EW is just plain better than the rest include Stephen King, the fact that someone in that office recognizes that Criminal Minds is one of the worst shows on TV and is as amazed as I am at why people actually watch that show, and because EW is one of the most geek-friendly publications that isn't science or tech centric.
