I wanted to draw some Iron Giant fanart for a while, and
Iron Giant Project provided an excellent reason for it. WHY YES, I DO LIKE DRAWING GIANT ROBOTS. 8D
Full picture and some thoughts about the movie below.
I love this movie. It sure has some logic flaws (and bad movie science), but it gets overpowered by amazing animation, likable characters (even antagonists or minor background characters), touching story and a great message. ...and robots.
And since this is LJ (a.k.a I Can Rant Here), I'm going to sum up main issues I have with this movie so I don't have to explain it every time. :P I mean I still love it lots but... seriously.
I think everybody who wanted to see this movie already did it (as it was released 10 years ago), so I won't spoil anything. Also, beware tvtropes links.
1) It is VERY CONVENIENT that the switch that turns electricity IN THE WHOLE CITY off is located on the outside of the power station. Obviously it is there so little kids can turn electricity on and off when they feel like it.
2) If the giant stayed conscious while he was hit but the power, why couldn't he tear the cables off? If he tore just one cable out, he wouldn't be under the charge anymore.
3) Why did Hogarth first EAGERLY go in the woods to look for the Giant (and feed him) but them was VERY SCARED and ran like wind when he actually saw him?
4) The "roooock" scene. People don't learn languages that easily, let alone completely alien robot. Even if we assume that the Giant comes from the world similar to ours (and we can assume it seeing how he looks like a giant metal human), the more reasonable way to communicate with an advanced alien technology would be through numbers (Fred Hoyle's The Black Cloud is an excellent example of this, but you're probably tired of me mentioning the book all the time). Actually, everybody speaking English is a plague of bad science fiction and there's a
tvtrope on it.
5) The Giant's bump disappearing is a deus ex machina if I've ever seen one. I don't care what you say, "he was so angry that his head healed" is NOT a reasonable explanation.
6) The nuclear missile scene is messed up period. Apart from
A Nuclear Error I don't think targeting something that moves works exactly like that.
I know what you're going to say. "Oly, but nobody cares about it! Do you really expect people to write a cartoon based on children book somewhat realistically?" But yes, I do. It's a matter of trying to do your best and a matter of treating your audience fairly. I try to do it with my comics, and it surprises me why professional people with a whole team of writers and consultants don't do it.
This said, everything else about this movie is PERFECT and amazing. :B
